Papa Rodin Reviews - JoJos Bizarre Adventure Part 2 - Battle Tendency
Greetings my fellow Steemians and Steemettes.
Last time in JoJos Bizarre Adventure, we saw how Jonathan Joestar and his wife Erina had the pretty much worst honeymoon trip ever. If you want to read up the story up until that point, look no further than this. After Jonathan sacrificed himself to stop his adoptive brother Dios diabolic ambition, his wife managed to survived the disaster. She also managed to safe the small orphan girl that was close by. With our main character dead, how will the story unfold further from here on out?
Planting new roots
After Erina has been saved, she returned to Britain. The orphan she gave away to a group of people who were on good terms with her family. The people who thought Will A. Zeppeli the secrets of hamon Breathing, in fact. I did not mention these in the last part because they were pretty much inconsequential to the story then are still mostly are here except for one of them. Erina also gave birth to a healthy baby boy named George Joestar, after Jonathans father. He ended up becoming an Airforce Pilot, probably one of the most badass careers one can think of. He also ended up marrying the orphan girl that Erina saved previously. Sometimes, these things just work out. The two of them of course had a child. A child that so happens to be a spitting image of his grandfather Jonathan Joestar.
Meeting Joseph Jojo Joestar
Similarities between Joseph and his grandfather are mostly limited to looks. Joseph has an entirely different personality than Jonathan had in his time. Smart and crafty, this one is. Where Jonathan used his ridiculously huge frame to power through problems by sheer determination, Joseph is able win by applying strategy, proper planning and foresight. He also is a natural when it comes to the art of hamon breathing, as we will find out in his introduction. His father passed away earlier before the story begins and his mothers status is unknown, which means that JoJos only direct family connections left to him are his grandmother Erina, which he treasures and protects with a lions heart and, of course, Speedwagon, who kept close to the Joestar family ever since the earliest days.
JoJos Bizarre Adventure continues
Living in 1938s america must have been hard. Not for JoJo, who is just here for a visit with his grandmother Erina. For the black boy who steels his wallet while JoJo is about to buy his first cola, this may be a different story. Pursuing the thief, he finds him cornered by two corrupt cops who brutalize the boy and try to force him to do them favors. JoJo, unhappy with this unsightly picture in front of him, tries to bail the black boy out by saying that the wallet was actually a gift and that the cops should let go of him. Changing targets to JoJo, one of the cops gets nasty and puts a booger in JoJos face. Corrupt people in uniforms, right? Feeling high and mighty about himself the police man attempts to do the same again. I say "attempt" because JoJo punches his face as his finger was still picking his nose. The other policemen draws his gun on him, which leaves JoJo unfazed. Simply stating that as soon as he pulls the trigger, JoJo would break his finger, JoJo uses his Hamon breathing to send a ripple into the Cola bottle he still holds in his hand, blasting the cap off at high speed at the policeman's trigger finger, breaking it in the process. So much for keeping promises, right?
Realizing that doing these things to policemen might make his Grandmother angry, he and the thief bail out and run. They also befriend each other and introduce themselves. The thief is called "Smokey Brown", while the man who he tried to steal from is, well......you know that by now.
My early impression
When I looked up until this part, I was hooked immediately. Jonathans grandson was a character right up my alley, smart, resourceful, comical and just super entertaining. The art style and animation was as beautiful as ever, if not even more outstanding and even the music improved and changed in a way that make like it even more. And I say that even though a lot of pieces aren't from genres that I usually enjoy. But let me pull your attention to what, again, is arguably the best thing about this part yet again: The Opening.
I am deeply in love with the music, have been ever since I have heard it for the first time. Animation wise, this opening is as vibrant and flamboyant as one can imagine, which sets an interesting contrast to the music itself. As with the previous opening, this one basically tells the story of JoJos Bizarre Adventure again. It is a great visual summary.
So how does it continue?!
Actually, as I am writing this, I changed my mind. I will stop going into the story and character development any further than this. If you have read my previous post or seen Phantom Blood yourself, no matter how much you liked either, you should watch Battle Tendency. It is one of the best shows I have seen over the last 10 years and has entertained me greatly.
Some pointers though:
The story will take JoJo to different places on the globe during the time of the war. Germans will be involved and we will be pumped every time we see them because German tech iz za best. Your sexuality will be challenged by all the flamboyant posing over the top masculinity that will be thrown into your face. There will be a lot of asspulls out of seemingly nowhere and you will love them. There will be a lot of things that already has been used as memes, even more music references and even a moment that gave me a feeling that I haven't had since watching the first star wars triology. If someone catches this reference, let me know in the comments below, you are special.
And if you need anything else to convince you, let me show you our hero JoJo at both his best and his worst.
He has tequila with him.
If you have seen this part of JoJos Bizarre Adventure, leave me a comment and tell me how you liked it.
And then what?
As the first picture and the notice that JJBA has been in serialization for almost 30 years by now, you can figure that there will be six more parts after this. The last one is actually still not finished but as far as I have heard, it will be the last one of them. With Part 2 being one of my favorite parts of the series, I will make an effort out of writing about the other parts as well.
Until then, thank you all for your loyalty and support!
