RE: "Annihilation" by Alex Garland - a really good movie that will unfortunately not be highly appreciated - review

in #review6 years ago

I like the ending, but the rest is quite garbled. Not confusing, just garbled because it's badly edited and directed (imho). However just for the ending, it's worth it.

The reference to "Under the Skin" indeed was obvious and welcome :) I would also suggest it was nice to see a Sci-Fi which does not shy away from horror scenes, blood and entrails, a bit like Neill Blomkamp (District 9).

Also when you say "Picton by the Road of Brooks Strugatsky", you mean "Picnic by the side of the road" from the Strugatsky brothers, right?

Sort:

Yes, about brother Strugatsky book.

The ending for me was brilliant... otherwise, the movie really surprisingly balances the weird and the purely entertainment element. I forgot and I think it is appropriate to mention the conscious absence of a real antagonist - history leads you to the nose for the most part of the action, the cosmic horror atmosphere takes over the mood in its entirety, but in a purely motivational plan, Evil is not evil, a kind of panacea for the characters, even those who were not quite developed. :)

Yes, well observed: in the absence of a clearly identifiable enemy, the characters eventually turn against one another. Such is the human way :)
