In time for the Valentines Day tomorrow, I am posting my 5th book review on romance novels. This is my first review of Mary Balogh's book here in Steemit. This book is under historical romance, a standalone although it is a part of a Westcott Novel series. This book has 272 ebook pages. It tells a story of Alexander Westcott who is the new Earl of Riverdale, a title that he never desired yet fell to his shoulders. Together with the title, he inherited the Brambledean Court and estate, a failing country estate that needed considerable resources and work to become more productive. As a conscientious gentleman, he fully intended to salvage the neglected estate for the people who especially depended on it and on him. His problem was he did not have the resources or the money to achieve such goals.

Wren Heyden, on the other hand, lives on the neighboring estate of Brambledean. She is a recluse, always wears a veil to hide her purple blemish at one side of her face but is extraordinary rich heiress to a glasswork business and is bold enough to make a marriage proposal to Alexander knowing that she has the money that the former needed to save his estate. In return, Wren wanted to settle down and experience the life of being a married woman. However, how enticing her offer was, she did not get an easy yes from the new Earl. Alexander wanted a proper courtship with hopes that they can at least share friendship and respect for each other in the process.

Courtship, engagement and marriage ensued as a result. However, Wren has more problems brought about by her childhood and when she finally decided to face those secrets, an unexpected bond was built between them that led them to feel deeper feelings for each other and eventually made them realized that they actually love each other.

This story shows more of the independence and strength of Wren as a woman in facing her darkest secrets and freeing herself from it. It also shows that a love built from friendship and respect can lead to stronger relationship that can make two persons a better versions of themselves.

I do not find the book really exciting in terms of the turn of events in the story. But, the character development of Wren is really compelling. Also, having established her name as an authority in historical romance genre, the author, Mary Balogh still awes the readers in her writing style in this book. So, if you are a fan of historical romance then this book is surely worth of your time.

Thank you for reading my review. I will be posting my next review in few days.
