The Absurdity of Religious Extremism

Religious fundamentalism is bad. It's a virus that we should all get an antidote to.

Yesterday, me alongside some of my friends were chilling in the house, discussing about major happenings in the world. David who is a christian, made a jocular comment about Islam extremists that terrorize the World, and then he said that those who believe in the afterlife promise of virgins are simply delusional.

This statement didn't go down well with Farouk, a Muslim friend who was also in our midst. Farouk got angered and highly infuriated by David's remark. He called David a senseless Infidel, who deserved to die for talking bad about Islam.

"How dare you call followers of Mohammed, delusional? You must respect Islam, it's because of people like you Boko Haram and ISIS won't stop bombing", he further exclaimed.

I was highly shocked at how personal and sensitive people take religion to be. It has gotten to the extent of wishing a friend death, and justifying it.

Nothing should justify killing another person. Aside being a Muslim or a Christian, you're a human being. Your rationality and common sense should supersede your emotional affection towards any religion.

You need to understand that the World doesn't revolve around you. Your religion is not the only one on earth. It's subject to public scrutiny, validation and criticism. You should grow above letting criticisms scratch the surface of your emotions.

You have a right to your religion. Similar way, people have their rights to criticise it. You're psychotic if you can't tolerate people talking blasphemously about your religious views, to the extent of killing them, or wishing them death. You need aid. You need therapy!

You just have to live, and let others live. Humanity precedes religion.

Peace!

Beyond holding an objection against extremist reactionary behavior, which applaud
You should have called out your christian friend on their thoughtless hypocrisy.

Here to agree with @deadsparrow and glad you called out that hypocrisy @udochi. I completely agree that differences in belief are not reasons for death. It hurts my heart that so many have their faith systems skewed both internally and externally as with media representations of Muslims as the primary religious terrorists when far more self-identifying Christians have committed violent acts of terror globally. Not here for an argument. Simply compassion for those who are defensive, even if wrongly, about intolerance of their system of belief when they are the politically/globally oppressed party.

I did. But still, everyone has an opinion and we gotta respect that. No one deserves to be killed for having an opinion contrary to one's faith. That was what i tried explaining to Farouk.
