To summarize, Judah had been about to burn Tamar for becoming withchild while acting as a harlot, until she points out that the child is Judah’s. Judah realizes that he had broken his promise to send her his third son, Shelah, to impregnate her once he was old enough, so he let’s her live. But since he had fulfilled the spirit of his agreement for his family to impregnate her, he sends her off to be a single mother, their contract concluded.
Genesis 38:27-30:
27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.
28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.
Admittedly, the ending is a bit anticlimactic. But there are a number of important lessons we can glean from this story. In particular, The Jesus is pro-prostitution. So long as the man is unmarried, it is better than letting one’s seed fall to the ground. Also, should the woman become pregnant, the man is not responsible at all. Which makes perfect sense. After all, if it’s the woman’s job to sleep with men, she kind of takes on the responsibility of not getting pregnant on herself.
