Faces of Jamaica [Part 1 of 10] "The Brain Doctor"
Jamaica is a place, that if you didn't know your way around, you may feel overwhelmed, especially at first. A tourist is very easily portrayed and if it was your first time traveling to the country, you may feel pressured by the many coming up to you saying, "Ah, yes, my friend, I remember you!"
Yes, they are your friend, but they have never met you before. It's your first time to the island, right? Right.
The country is impoverished in places, yes, but this does not define the people, the culture, the traditions, and the like. The people are some of the nicest people I have ever met in all of the world and I have been to many a places in my time.
Do not feel overwhelmed and do not be afraid to say "no." They will understand that you cannot give everyone 100 Jamaican Jays on the island. It's tough to say no, but I tell you from experience, the Jamaicans will always leave you in respect. This is their way of ways - RESPECT.
I have met a number of people and I have stayed in touch with many of them over the years as well. The cool thing about Jamaicans is that they always seem to have an alias. Very seldom will you meet someone where they will give your their real name. I have met people with multiple aliases, usually dealing with something they are well known for like "The Brain Doctor" for instance.
I'm sure you can guess why people refer to him as the Brain Doctor, no?
The brain doctor I have met on multiple trips to Jamaica. He makes assortments of jewelry, rasta belts, and anything you can think of - custom made. I have bought several items from the brain doctor and even on the last visit, I brought him a bag of clothes that my son outgrew so he could give them to his family and friends. Oh, yeah, and he is referred to as the brain doctor because of his "fertile greens, mon."
This here picture was from my last trip in 2014. I saw him coming from a distance down the white sandy beaches of the 7-mile strip in Negril. He looked different. The hair was shorter and underneath a hat this time. The last time I recalled his long, natty dreadlocks. I recognized the frame and I waited as he came closer.
I was right outside the Rondel Village, my usual place of stay when I visit the island. I know the security guards there, John-O and Carl. I was talking to them as the brain doctor approached closer. I asked them both if that was, in fact, the brain doctor.
They both replied at the same time, "Yes mon, this is him."
I stopped him and we recounted from previous times we had met. I asked if he would make me a bracelet. He went to work right then and there.
Until next time, The Brain Doctor

That is great to hear, the brain doc definitely deserves the love from the Negril community! I will be sharing, hopefully one per day, Faces of Jamaica posts, until the 10 part series is over. But I certainly can do another series at some point in time. I have plenty of faces to share and it seems as though the community has taken a liking to this type of post in the #reggaesteem tag
Yes, I will certainly stop down at @miyard the next time i am in town. I am hoping to visit in the next year or two. I am seriously missing the island as a whole, bredddda
