How to make your own stuff from plastic!

HDPE-plastic-recyclen.jpg

Plastic is everywhere and creates a massive environmental disaster. It's very hard not to use plastic in the modern society but you can upcycle HDPE. High-density polyethylene is a free material found in common packaging. You can recognize it with the recycle logo 2. HDPE is often used for washing chemicals, milk and petrol.

HDPE

It has many positive characteristics en that's why it's used allot for packaging and tubing. Some of the characteristics are:

  • It is a thermoplastic what means that you can melt it. This is handy to recycle it in a new shape.
  • Special burners can completely burn the plastic and no toxic chemicals will be emitted.
  • organisms can't break it down
  • melts at 90 degrees Celsius
  • hygienic

Collecting HDPE

Collecting HDPE is quite easy. It is often used for packaging, garden furniture and tubing. If it's packaging try to remove the label. In the house you can collect milk jugs or washing liquid bottles they are a great source. Cut the bottles in small pieces to reduce space.

DIY

  • Step 1:
For reusing the material you first need to melt it back to a block. This can be done in the oven on 180 degrees Celsius. Fill a metal container with plastic. when its molten you have to squeeze and add more plastic till the can is full. When the can is full you have to hammer in the plastic so its really compressed. The more pressure the better.
  • Step 2:
Make something simple to practice. Make a cutting board, a hammer, tiles or simply a block. When your skilled you can make machine parts! A nice video about making HDPE things is here.

Recyclebot & 3D printing

3D printing exploded in the last 5 years, the machines are getting affordable. The printing is now no problem but the filament is really expensive. They now invented the recyclebot this is a machine that recycles HDPE into filament suitable for a 3d printer! 3D printers are a great way to become more less reliable on shops. This is definitely handy as a homesteader.

Help yourself and help the environment by collecting plastic!

Hey i've never tried to melt hdpe, but your post gave me a really good idea. I'm going to make tags, and label different cultivars of hazel's i have. I'm thinking of heating a chisel and engraving the tags that way.
Hmm thanks for the idea!

Maybe just write on it like engraving in wedding rings. Hdpe is soft enough esp if you use a low heat solder pen.

Plastic affects human health Toxic chemicals leach out the plastic. Their exposure is related to cancer, birth defects, ill immunity, and other diseases.

You get it!

Great post

thanks

Terrible plastic use

Environmental pollution in plastic waste day by day. Plastics in the world are seriously affecting It can not be controlled in any way.Due to the lack of awareness and the notorious effects of plastic, environmental pollution is increasing due to the alarming rate. Now is the time to expel the plastic. thanks @gogreenbuddy your green project will help the environment in this case.

Very interesting. We have been repurposing old plastic 55 gallon drums here on our farm. We make feeders and water containers out of them. I never thought of melting the plastic down though. Great information. Keep it coming.

Those blue drums could be hdpe. They definitely look and feel like hdpe

one mans trash is another mans' treasure.
one man's pollution is another man's solution.
quitcha bitchin and take advantage of the opportunity.

You would be doing a lot of people a BIG help if you could go deeper into the making things part of this. Especially the 3d printer stuff. I have a project I am working on for a post to turn plastic cutting boards into art work that can be sold to help people make money from home. Being able to recycle plastic and then make the cutting boards would be a BIG DEAL! Every time I have looked in to possibly getting a printer, I give up in frustration because I have zero idea of what I am really looking for.

About 3d printing I know little. I studied in Eindhoven where it's a huge thing. I just like the recyclebot it suddenly makes printing cheap.
