Song of the Day - Color Loss by From The Mouth Of The Sun
I miss record stores.
Look, I know it's great and all the power of the internet and the ability it has to share music. It's entire reason I'm able to write this blog, but I miss record stores anyway for some of the reasons that I know and love this song with a scant 700 plays on Youtube. That reason would be because when you find a good one who knows you well, they are able to push you some things you would have never found with the rather largely algorithmic search engines that we use to discover music online. One of the reasons I write this everyday is because on some level it is keeping those ethos of music discovery alive. If I can persuade one person to listen to something new because I wrote about it than this blog has been worth it even if it gets lost in the crowd a bit.
This album comes from a rather random stop at Wall of Sound, a tiny record store in Seattle. The owner for some reason still remembered me from years earlier when a stop at the store with a friend of mine years earlier soon turned into pre-concert wine and drunken music listening. He still remembered me and when I asked for a recommendation for something I had never heard of before he pointed me towards this album and I'm really glad he did as Woven Sun has turned into one of my top 5 ambient records over the years.
The centerpiece of this is the mourning piece called Color Loss that oozes sadness from it in the most beautiful way. At first there isn't much going on. Some textured ambience that is broken up with slight bell hits. Soon enough a mournful vocal arises from the background. About midway through, a sting section makes it's way in providing a profoundly sad and surprisingly cinematic ending to the track. The melody of this song is the stuff of dreams for me that is intensified by the minimalism that runs before it. It's a huge ambient favorite that always reminds me of the power that a record store can have to break you free of your expectations. Visit your local record store. Not just on Record Store Day. Support the stores that give a local scene a sense of community. You might be surprised what you end up loving.
I'm so glad I have come across your profile. I started searching people with the same passion as I have - music. And your profile is the proof. As you write in the first paragraph about persuading one person, I can say with absolute certainty - listening to this piece of beatiful music absolutely worth it.
Thank you for sharing. It made my day :-)
Looking forward to your next tips and thoughts about music!
I really appreciate it. I try to post on the regular and give a good mix of new songs and some songs that I have good memories wrapped around. I'm glad someone else enjoyed it. I always want to talk to folks about music like this but it's hard living in my small little town.
I feel that pain of living in a place without record stores! On the other hand, if I had record stores nearby I would spend all my money there :)
Luckily I have a circle of friends that love to gather and share music and do some jam sessions... interesting music, thank you for this post.
Although different this reminded me of Svarte Greiner.
I agree with you. I'd be broke like I was in my youth for sure, but living in a small town I really just miss the option on digging through something physical for hours.
