Song of the day - Scherzo from the Mendelssohn Octet
This is my submission for the Song of the Day by @recordpool.
The Mendelssohn Octet for strings (4 violins, 2 violas and 2 cellos) is by far and away, one of the masterworks of the "Classical" music genre. Firmly planted in the Romantic Age, this piece was composed when Mendelssohn was only 16! It is comprised of 4 movements, of which this 3rd movement (the Scherzo) is most representative of the stereotypical character that Mendelssohn was associated with. A light fleeting whirlwind of fast moving notes that are resemble the characters (fairies) from the Midsummer Nights Dream.
The entirety of the Octet is amazing, but this Scherzo is particularly great. The eye (ear) is distracted from place to place, a shimmer of sound, a fragment of a melody... it really is the musical representation of the fey... ethereal and fleeting!
It was also difficult to find a good performance, although the music sounds effortless and light, it is actually quite a difficult piece (especially for the first violinist). So, as compensation, many groups take it much slower, resulting in the image of a fat heavy fairy that is unable to lift off the ground....
