THE HARD REALITY OF OUR MADE IN INDIA SMARTPHONES

We all use our smartphones and in India the business of smartphone is developing pace like a missile launched. Every third person is using smartphone these days. So we buy a smartphone and we will be happy to see the made in India caption on the box, the Logo, which makes us proud. But are these phones really made in India? Today we are going to discuss about the hard truth regarding the "Made in India" smartphones that are available in the market.

May be you all will be knowing about this fact but I need to discuss these facts today on this platform. So is your mobile actually made in India? Is this manufactured in India? Or which are those components which will be made in India?

We have a famous campaign in India which is "Make in India" campaign. The motto of this campaign, is that the mobile manufacturer or any other manufacturer has to set up the manufacturing unit in India and sell their phones in India or any other country. By this the local jobs will be created and we will be benefited by the growth of the economy. If we discuss about the smartphone here, we would have learnt from the box of a smartphone manufacturer that the smartphone is actually manufactured in India. And even the smartphone companies promote their smartphone as made in India. They always claim that they have set up plants in India for the manufacturing of the phone, and we are producing so much of phones over here and all. But in actual condition, If you think your smartphone is made in India, then you are completely wrong. So which are the parts of your phones made in India? The dark reality here is that, only the charger and if the company provide the earphones so the earphones. Apart from these two parts none of your smartphone components are made in India.

Not even the body parts of these smartphones are Made in India, so why are these companies claiming that their phones are made in India? What makes them to claim such things? The answer for this is that your phone will be having lot of components like the motherboard, the processor on the motherboard, memory modules, the camera of the phone, the display of the phone, the battery of the phone, speaker, the microphone and many of the sensors and the complete body. All these components are just brought here and they are just been assembled in the plans of these manufacturers and they claim it has made in India. Actually these phones are not made in India, most of the components of most of the brands are made in China or some other countries like Korea, Japan and Taiwan etc.

The companies which are setting up plants in India, doing it for the sake of their own interest, not for the interest towards our country, they will be having lot of tax benefits by setting up the plants over here. The primary motive of these companies are to save money. If they import the whole phone from any other country to India, they will be paying more tax on that phone than the components that they are getting imported. These components are imported to their plants under the make in India project, which provides tax benefit, and the companies are interested in this particular tax benefit.

As a remedy for this, the Indian government has decided for phased manufacturing
In which they plan for manufacturing of single component each year. For example for the first year they will be planning for the manufacturing of battery and the chargers.Second year they will be planning for the display. By doing this the entire mobile phone will be manufactured in India by 2020. But the reality is, the investment for the fabrication unit of these phones are thousands of crores. Just a plant to setup processor manufacturing will need at least 1000 crore investment. Skilled engineers in India who are experienced in this kind of environment are also very less. I am not talking about the talent of the people or the knowledge of the people. We have ample talent and we have great knowledge in our youth. But they have to be trained in such kind of environment in which they can handle any challenge which bombards them while handling this kind of situation.

Basically the motto of this kind of Companies are not clear. They are just concentrating on their earning via shortcuts buy just implementing assembling plants in India & they are claiming that the phones are made in India. The news that they are manufacturing the phones in India is clearly bogus or false, they are just assembling there imported (tax benefited) parts and boxing it as made in India.

We are emotionally connected to Indian brands of the smartphones. So what are these so-called Indian brands doing, they also claim that their phones are manufactured in India, the hard truth is companies like Micromax, Lava, Karbonn, Swipe, these are just technically Indian companies but the entire phones are imported from China and they are just branded over here. They are just making their branding in India, not even assembling the parts in India.

We are not hoping for the sudden development to manufacture all the components in India. But we are concerned the these companies gradually, like in the next 5 years are given additional aid from the government, Government has to implement strict rules that the investment should be of that level on which they can manufacture the components from the scratch.

Let us hope that these companies in future develop real interest to invest in India to develop step by step to manufacture the components. Let Sony manufacture camera components in India. Let Qualcomm set up its factory to manufacture processor in India. Let Samsung implement its memory module in India. The components have to be manufactured India from the scratch. Not just assembling the components over here.
