You can become better at reading with practice, however many people barely read, preferring television, videogames or surfing the web rather than a book. This lack of practice in reading can cause problems when they have to study a book or read meaningful articles. Nevertheless, reading skills can be improved, and here are some tips that can help you achieve this:

1. Ask yourself why you read something.

Before you start reading is important for you to know why you are going to read. For example, if your teacher has assigned you a certain reading, you can ask (or try to deduce) what he hopes for you to learn from it. This is not the same as reading for entertainment or to find specific information on a topic that you want to know about.

Depending on the reason, you can focus especially in parts of the text that will help you achieve your purpose.

2. Take a quick look at the text.

Read titles, headings of various sections, the main paragraphs, (these are usually the first and the last paragraphs) look at the charts, and images to make a general idea of the content that you’re going to read. This will help you remember better when you read it entirely, and it will help you to know in advance where the most important parts of the content are.

3. Do not read word by word:

To read correctly, understand and remember what you read, is important to focus on the text, not only see letters or words. When a reader is looking at a text he sees groups of words together, not single words. If you have to read letter by letter or word by word you lose too much time and then when you finish reading a sentence you’ve already forgotten what it says. Therefore, to read properly, focus on reading several words at a time. You will see that when you do this you read much faster. Moreover, by so doing everything makes more sense because you have phrases and pieces of meaningful content that are easier to remember.

4. Underline or take notes.

Underline the text you read to highlight the main points. You can also add margin notes. These notes will serve you, for example, to remember the main idea of a paragraph.

5. Use mental images.

The pictures are better to recall than words. You can convert the meaning of it text into an image or mental video that will help you to remember it For instance, I’m going to take an apple from apple tree. With this you’re limited only by your imagination.

6. Review what learned after you finish

When you read all the text, underlines, etc., make a review of all at that moment. This will help to consolidate what you’ve learned, and remember it better.
