That was one of the points that was made in Ray Bradbury's book Fahrenheit 451.

It's not really about the books. It's about the fact that people allow themselves to be seduced by media that only comforts and coddles them. You could do this with either books or television. But in the book Fahrenheit 451 what was most relevant was the fact that television was centrally produced and represented the product of a committee that could be centrally controlled, while books were off of the thoughts of individuals. This made books a lot more dangerous.

Television could be just as good but that's not what either the public or the government wanted.

Now we have independent Media production, both written and audio-visual. Nevertheless people keep on choosing the mass produced stuff whether it is written or audio visual, over the independent stuff. Sometimes even assuring themselves that the mass produce stuff because of vetting and institutional respectability is actually the good stuff and the independent stuff is the stuff you should avoid.
