Why the use of nicotine cigarettes is legal and Marijuana use is not?
Nicotine and alcohol are to mainstream to make illegal, they have been around for so long and are part of culture. Let's say someone would discover the substance alcohol today and we don't have a history with it than they would probably make it illegal because of it's addictive and harmful effects.
Marijuana is also illegal because of some other reasons.
- It's associated with oppressed ethnic groups. Marijuana wasn't popular among white people before the 1960's. So you could argue that it's illegal out of racists believes.
- It's addictive. (There's no doubt about that but the question is how addictive is it really and how should we deal with it? )
- Has been historically linked with other illegal drugs. Marijuana and cocaine are the 2 most popular drugs and sometimes people combine them or use different type of drugs. That doesn't give it a good reputation.
- Governments wrongly thought that by making a war on drugs they can make people quit so in their mind it was a good thing to make it illegal. The thing is in reality it's costing a lot of tax payers money that's wasted. Users are being forced to go into a criminal circuit and pay a higher price than you would in a free market. Out of an economic perspective it would be smarter to tax marijuana sales so it brings in revenue for the government instead of costing us money.
- Not much research has been done what the medicinal use cases are. Some users with different types of illness claim to receive benefits from marijuana use. But there are not much scientific studies making the same conclusions since there hasn't been done a lot of research. It's hard to do research when it's illegal because they need special approvement from the government.
ill go ahead and say that, while there isnt enough "science" behind the medical use of cannabis, i had in the past found that a couple puffs of the sativa variety was effective in combating "ADD." At anyrate, i think it should be legal. tax it. the food/grocery industry will love it

While I don't smoke it I do think it should be legalized because it has medicinal benefits! I have used CBD oil for managing pain and it's been a life saver! The big pharma companies don't want it because it will cut into their profits from the overpriced drugs they push on us! They don't care about the bad side affects because then they just give you more meds to deal with it which means more money for them!
The reason they won't do away with cigarettes or alcohol is because they make a lot of money off of them! Medical marijuana is gaining ground in more states because they are now seeing a way to make money from it. Getting it legalized for recreational purposes will become more popular once they come up with ways to make money off of it legally! It always comes down to the almighty dollar!
In India for centuries many saints (sadhus) use Marijuana to smoke and they got them from Himalayas and their life span has been noted to be more than average life span of urban and rural living people

It depends, marijuana itself is not dangerous but the problem is that most people smoke it. Smoking is always harmful to our lungs doesn't matter if it's tobacco or marijuana. When you eat it there is no problem. Or use a vaporizer instead of burning, which is also a lot healthier.
In India marijuana also consumed in holy ritual during Lord Shiva's birthday as Bhang

Well i was in India 2 years ago. I was in the north in Panipat and asked some Indian men who came to me and said hi if they could get me some ganja. But they looked very strange to me like i came from another planet or something. I don't understand why. I'm a western maybe they didn't expect me to ask or they just don't smoke themselves.
Then i travelled to Kerala in the south but i didn't see ganja there. No idea how to get it in India.
You must visit Nathdwara in your next visit and ask for "Thandaai" with the bhaang and you will surely kick your mind.

I asked for charas and ganja, i think they understood but didn't smoke themselves.
even if they might smoke themselves but direct approach make them fearful and specially by a white guy they afraid of being caught by news makers or local authorities ganja and charas is not freely sold but ganja with a name of Bhang is called as "Prasad" of the God so its being sold easily with the name of God...
