Our Puppy Goes On Heat !!!

Today marks the end of puppy hood, she is now an adult dog.

Nala is just over 9months old she is a Staffy, half English, half American staffordshire bull terrier.
We adopted her at 9 weeks old. She was one of 12 puppies.
Nala picked us, she came straight over to the fence, she was so curious and wanted to be held, we knew she was the one!
She was so tiny roughly 2 1/2kgs now to think she has grown so much in such a short time weighing just on 15kgs.

It is so hard to look into your puppies eyes and see them in distress/ confusion. Late last night Nala finally went on heat. She has been showing signs that her body was preparing for heat for weeks now, we just didn't know when it was going to happen.

First she started getting destructive mood swings, then her nipples started getting larger, then her vulvar started to get larger.

Nala is normally a cuddly dog as staffies are. She always wants to be with you and sulks if she isn't... but this morning she was extra hormonal and was leaning on us when we were getting ready for work.

You maybe wondering why we have not got Nala desexed???
Nala was born with a weak immune system, which means she would pick up very little thing evertime we would take her out....she couldn't catch a break!
We were just lucky that our vet diagnosed her with puppy strangles and treated her accordingly ever since then she has been really healthy YAY!

Our vet also recommended that we let her go through her first heat so that her hormones balance and immune system mature. Charlie & I went really unsure ... we didn't want her to get pregnant however we wanted her to be fit and healthy. So we decided to take the advice of our vet and let her go through her first heat.
Fast forward a few months and the time has come she is now on heat. Our worry is still that a dog may get in or she may get out to find a mate. but its all the risk you take letting her go through this!
