Psychology Chronicles Series #8 : On Social Media & Suicide | The Deadly Alliance of Society's Newest Enemy
"Life ends before it starts. The gift of life turned into a boundless nightmare where words and feelings are trapped only in someone else's memory."
When the rain pours,it harbors a lot of negative emotions inside of me and makes my entire entity into a desolated state. It's sad to see the drops of rain falling into the ground as I take a glance on my window. I just couldn't contain myself to stop thinking about pessimistic thoughts. I would sound hypocrite if I would say that never in my life did I not think about ending a life that's supposed to be beautiful. Everybody has their own scars they tend to hide and wounds that are disguised as cheerful smiles.
If your life sucked big time and you cant see any ray of light shining upon your miserable soul. You would want to escape from it's tormenting hands. It may come as a surprise to you but I too have suffered from this horror. I felt that I am gazing at someone else's life through a mirror. I thought that I dont deserve my life because I am not enough.
I took up Psychology not because I'm an expert at dealing with people's problems but because of my will to understand myself.
When I studied about the complexities on the human mind and how it governs our behavior. I realized bit by bit that ending one's life is never the answer to any life's problems. Life is amazing though sometimes it teaches us to be tolerant to pain,it still has its wonders. And slowly I am captivated by it. I am now blessed with a brave heart & a clear mind.I realized that life is beautiful so I needed to stay and I will always stay for all the fascinating people that surrounds me.
After waking up from hitting the rock bottom I realized that I needed to share my thoughts about this dilemma. I've always wanted to write something about suicide and the tragedy it brings. So as of this writing I am imparting my thoughts freely regarding the terrors of Suicide.
Suicide is internally driven. It is an action causing someone to end one's lifeline.
It is triggered by a lot of stressors. Whether it's about mental disorders, personality disorders or personal matters. It is very difficult to predict if one is planning to take away his/her life. Since personal problems can be disguised as normal. Those people who have previously tried to commit suicide are most likely to commit the same act if the triggers are provoked again.
Other suicidial acts are abrupt. It maybe caused by other factors such as financial instability, relationship issues,work-related problems and family affairs. All of these summed up could really push the suicidal victim to realize cutting his/her own life. The sudden rise of suicidal cases has a new culprit and I personally think that social media has its own fair share of the issue at hand.
In this new information age It is really evident that there is a huge connection between suicide and social media usage.Social media is sweeping the world by storm. Making it the most used platform in the web. It benefits people of all ages because of it's versatility. It boasts a wide array of purpose: from entertainment to communication. It is undeniably useful.
But what if it is also the reason why suicide cases are increasing in an incredibly fast rate?
Social media also has it's dark side. It offers convenience, accessibility and availability to its users worldwide. And people are dangerously abusing this opportunity to either hurt theirselves or to hurt others. These are the ff. negative effect of social media to suicidal tendencies:
It could trigger low self-esteem and jealousy
I felt envious of what I see in social media. About my friends achieving their dreams. Getting a new house, buying a new car or travelling to different parts of the world. It makes me sulk up and get depressed. It could provoke the monster inside of me. I dont want to be jealous but I just couldn't help it if all I see are reflection of my own failures. I am still susceptible to these negative feelings as an adult and I can't hardly imagine teenagers feeling the same way too. We know that usually their weakness is based on how they see society. They could be inferior when they would compare theirselves with body images, social media's standard of beauty and vice versa. How depressing it could be.
Cyberbullying on social media
I have read a lot of news about kids being bullied in social media. It is known that social media is beneficial for communication purposes but teens nowadays make this as an outlet to belittle others. It is not new to us that social media sites are an avenue for bullying. Though verbal violence takes place in the web,it doesn't stray away from the fact that it could ruin someone else's life. Cyberbullying and cyber aggression could result to proactive suicidal tendencies.
Suicide Information Desk
Because of social media sites and the internet which provides information about almost everything. It is not surprising that people are searching for ways to kill themselves in the virtual world. I've tried to googled ways to commit suicide to check how these information are readily available online and I was shocked on what I saw... There are numerous websites offering methods of painless death or some of the best ways to kill yourself. This is very alarming since these kind of dangerous information can be accessed by anyone at any given time.
Social networking sites should support preventing mental health issues rather than promoting it. It should be a channel for self-growth and on creating positive relationships.
It saddens me to see horendous articles circulating online about social media being a catalyst for self-destruction.
Social media should be a place for self-esteem development not an outlet for self-slaughter. If you know someone who is experiencing this, please do not hesitate to seek for immediate help.Society's future lies in our hands. At the end of the day it will always depend on whether we will fight back or curl our way back down.
Giving you love & light on suicide awareness,
@sakura1012

Hi @georgie84, nice to meet. kumusta ka kabayan?
Hi @sakura1012 great post.I totally agree that social media is affecting peoples self esteem - others are very careful how they portray themselves online. I barely look at social media now but when I do it is full of selfies around the world and perfect families. Some people who are vulnerable to mental health problems could start to wonder - why is my life not perfect like everyone else?
I am from New Zealand where we have a problem with suicide - I think that social media is changing the way people get bullied. When I was a child (in the 90s!) alot of bullying was just name calling, now it is alot of online bullying where they can reach alot more people and do alot more damage.
Last year I watched the Netflix show '13 reasons why' Which was about a girl being bullied. It was well done and highlighted to me how your actions can affect others.

@conradt glad you read my blog about social media and suicide. It is indeed slowly changing society by establishing unrealistic standards. And the ones who are suffering would be the next generation to come..It is really heartbreaking that eliminating this menace is very difficult to do since it already has rooted to the minds of people.
Glas I found it. It is something that we often choose not to talk about but I think by sharing and talking about different strategies for coping with depression and mental health we are helping people. Keep up the good work :)
Yes indeed it is so sad to know that suicide on social media or social media and suicide is becoming a trend nowadays especially to the youth and I totally hate it! That's why I opted to post an article about it. Thanks for your heartwarming words @conradt. 😉
