EMPLOYMENT IN AFRICA; SOURCE OF INCOME VS PRACTICING YOUR SKILL SETS
Not all white collar jobs pays well, neither all of it gives peace of mind. As a matter of fact, researchers stated that an office job tends to increase rate of high blood pressure in a given set of people than in self employed/working from home.
The truth is, been your own boss is the best, no doubts about it as nobody gets to boss you around here and there. No salary issues nor bonuses and allowances shenanigans that comes with working for someone or a firm.
In this part of the world, the hype of white collar job is so enormous to the extent that, when you meet someone for the first time; the question you get is:
"Where do you work?" or "do you work for a multinational company or an indigenous firm?"
This are just Hypes that came out of nothing, employment in an office does not guarantee a good source of income. Many people working from home earn triple of what office workers make, and some make millions trading online and investing in cryptocurrencies without stepping out of their homes.
Source of Income:
A vast majority all around the world most especially in Africa, people work to earn a living and nothing more. Even though many are underpaid, they never quit because if they do; life gets tough on them as they have no other means of earning income except from their salaries.
Whether on contracts basics or full time job, this folks do not want to miss out on a weekly or monthly paying employment. This had been imprinted into people's memory that everyone must be employed and earn salaries!
Practicing your Skills- Enjoying what you love doing:
Employment to some set of people is a dream living because they do not work for income; they work for passion and the satisfaction they drive from utilizing their specific skills. The pay might be shitty but they love what they do and enjoy every little time they spend doing it.
Comparing this two groups
The difference between this two sets of people is so much; i can attest to it from my little work experience that the percentage of people working only to get paid dwarfs the percentage of people who work and derive pleasure in their output rather than their income.

There is nothing as fulfilling as making money while enjoying what you love doing, typical examples are sport men n women that earn mega money while having fun...i mean check out basketballers, footballers (Neymar just recently), formular 1 drivers...i can go on n on...

being your own boss is sweet. But staying your own boss means you have to let those working for you love what they do. We all can't be on our own you know.
We all can't be, but what Lagos had taught me and from work experience; i will treat my subordinates sweetly even if it requires not employing many....
