Personality Tests Only Reveal That You Don't Have A Personality

in #psychology6 years ago (edited)

Every once in a while when I lurk in online forums and chats I stumble upon someone sharing some website about a personality test. Soon the rest of the herd starts taking the test and sharing the results.

The ritual of personality deduction through some random questions is no different than astrology. Along with other forms of petty deductive reasoning, these are pathetic attempts from people who are poor in critical thinking and half a rather low self esteem. No wonder they use these tests to find out or rather invent a personality. They don't have one.

So in a forum of shitcoiners I wasn't surprise to see that since their reputation is on the line, they try to come up with answers that enhance their traits. It is obvious but most people don't realize that the reason personality tests don't say anything about oneself is simply because you know already that is a personality test. In other words, the individual is being gamed in their own game before even start taking the quiz.

Second reason these tests are bullshit is the nature of questions. Much like with an astrological reading, all answers, win. They are designed this way since whether you take it for a job or leisure the result will be something that satisfies everyone. There is a place for you somewhere my special and precious one.

One can find any trait, prediction and characteristic about themselves in astrological signs because they are so incredibly generalized. Personality tests are even worse. The person or persons drafting the questions are already biased to test for specific things that are supposedly representing human nature. In order to do this, they use very broad questions that can go either way. So the person taking the test remembers only the situations that suit them and guide the test accordingly. Self-fulfilling prophecy at its finest.

"Oh yeah, that's so me" said the gullible noob that just wants validation for a personality that he so lacks. To their excuse, this is a rather common phenomenon in a world that is interconnected. Most people live online and where they don't have the knowledge, insights or experiences and so they rely heavily on the opinion of others. The more they rely on others the more they disassociate themselves with themselves. The "Who Am I?" product comes to be supplied from personality tests that serve the customer with exactly what they want. In other words, personality tests are popular and useful since they give personalities to those who need them most. "There you go son. You have one of these 4 letter combination personalities. You are no longer empty. Now you know who you are."

It gets even worse. The more personality tests one takes, the more they dive into the rabbit hole of self delusion. Every tests works as a confirmation bias for the next one, trying to improve, reflect and so on. If anything, the consecutive tests should reveal to people (that have above potato peal I.Q) that personality tests are not really tests and they are not really about personality. But as 99.9% of you are too stupid to get it, astrology and personality tests will continue outnumbering valid modes of reasoning.

The world does not change much. We like to think that we escaped from the shuckses of religion (or recently astrology) but humans seem to constantly fall into the same biased traps. Why? Well most people are children. They are forever victims of their emotions. My experience from that particular chat room was simply to understand what kind of people I was dealing with. That along with a past triggering, was great for evaluating market sentiment. It confirms that most people (as it happens with crypto) will follow some random person that shills a coin much the same as they followed the personality test meme without evaluating the validity of the tests.

So in a way, personality tests, at least the ritual of it, are extremely good for the Big Brother effect, not the plebs engaging in it. The markets are made up of people. Figure out how they react en-masse and you are granted to stay on top time after time.

TL;DR The lyrics from B-Movie - nowhere girl

Nowhere girl you're living in a dream,
Nowhere girl you stay behind the scenes,
Nowhere girl you never go outside,
Nowhere girl 'cause you prefer to hide.
Every day, every might
In that all old familiar light
You hang up when I call you at home.
And I try to get through
Ant I try to talk to you
But there's something stopping me from getting through.
Nowhere girl what you had you need,
Nowhere girl all functional and neat,
Nowhere girl in self-imposed exile,
Nowhere girl a martyr-like denial.
Every day, every might
In that all old familiar light
You hang up when I call you at home.
And I try to get through
Ant I try to talk to you
But there's…

You must be an INTJ, writing like this.

<evil grin>

You come on us so hard... Lol

Well, that's the simple truth, I don't buy into the idea of personality myself, personality test can only reveal to you what you already know about yourself.. Lol

The result you get is as a result of the answers you supply, is that truly a personality test? Lol

I am unsure what personality tests you are discussing, but you infer the Myers-Briggs test.

This test has its problems in that a person can be both, but usually, most people are right handed or left handed.

Introverted vs Extroverted.
this is the first breakdown in Myers-Briggs. And, if you do not know the distinction, well then just learning these two categories makes so many things clear. An introvert trying to party... usually fails. And fails badly.

And so it goes with three more pairings.

I find the Myers-Briggs good for categorizing people. In how best to interact with them.

And you need to do a lot of reading.

PsychologyToday is not good reading, imho.

Anyway, i said that the Myers-Briggs aren't set in stone indicators, but they are helpful.

What do you think of the big five?

Does not apply for the simple reason that the subject knows that is being tested. if the test it is not double blind (social sciences) then don't even bother mentioning it as valid from a scientific perspective.

Just the subject knowing about the Myers-Briggs test will make it so that no testing will be "scientifically" valid. Once you know the categories, identifying questions about which category you are is very easy.

It is easy to apply these categories to all of your friends. They are such a big part of a person's personality that they are easy to deduce and almost impossible to mimic for any long periods.

But really, this is a self assessment type test. The only person you would be fooling is yourself.

The biggest thing i got out of the Myers-Briggs is knowing how other people thought and could more accurately analyze their reactions. Knowing that other people think differently than you, actually in many ways opposite of you, allows for a much greater comprehension of the workings of humanity.

You know, like, republicrats think "how could anyone stupid as to vote democron"
and democrons fell, "how could anyone be so heartless as to vote republicrat"

So, what do you think of the big five?

Look, to cut things short, I don't perceive psychology as science. Including the Big Five. I have written plenty of posts explaining why. If an experiment cannot be replicated - or worse - falsified then it is not science.

Psychology is more about social engineering and less about human understanding.

In other words, the individual is being gamed in their own game before even start taking the quiz
Never thought of it quite like that but I agree
