Focused vs. Diffused Mode of Thinking and Learning

So, what’s the difference between these two modes?

According to Dr. Barbara Oakley, an engineering professor at Oakland University in Michigan, we can simply say:

  • FOCUSED LEARNING is a highly attentive state of mind when we are fully concentrated on one specific subject
  • DIFFUSED LEARNING is more relaxed mode of learning, when neurons are in the resting state and our mind freely wanders.

While focused learning is more close to how we consider a traditional learning, we seldom think of the importance of diffused learning. Neither is more or less important than the other, as both modes are complementary and best used combined.

After a period of focused learning, it’s recommended to take a short break, letting your mind rest and allowing it to connect the dots between bits of information.

You can try the Pomodoro Technique, when you set a timer for a 25-minute block of focused work, which is then followed by a brief 5-minute break reserved for diffused thinking.

In this way, diffused learning serves as the method of knowledge strengthening and consolidation, but moreover, even unexpected insights can occur during this phase.
So, that kind of intentional and planned ‘distraction’ from focused learning phase is actually welcomed and rewarded, because (although relaxed) your brain still works on learning concepts by solving problems in the background.

During those short pauses, you can even treat yourself with something you like (prepare a cup of coffee, grab some chocolate, do a little bit of stretching, breathe consciously or meditate, listen to your favorite song -- anything not work-related, that would relax your mind), then get back to focused work again.

By applying the combination of focused and diffused modes of learning, you'll learn easier and faster.
