Neuroscience Claims: Multitasking Could Be Harmful for Your Brain

Do you consider yourself as a multitasker?

Well, maybe you shouldn’t. Honestly, I myself used to be (and still am to some level) a proud multitasker, until I’ve run into an interesting article recently, that made me think about this habit.

As you know, multitasking is defined as simultaneously engaging in several different activities and switching quickly between them.

In this digital era, it usually refers to constantly checking our social media profiles, liking and replying to posts, answering cell phone calls, emailing - and all that keep going in circles, even while eating, working or socializing.

 The following article:

9 Ways Multitasking is Killing Your Brain and Productivity, According to Neuroscientists
... talks about reasons why multitasking might be bad for your productivity, creativity, efficiency and overall wellbeing. Knowing all that, letting distractions rule your life is not a good idea.

I’d like to add that it’s also important what kind of tasks you actually do simultaneously.

For example:

  • if you switch between the activities that need less of your focus, attention or intellectual engagement, then your brain switches between two or more tasks with ease,

  • in contrary, trying to perform highly demanding tasks, that require significant brain involvement, focus, conscious and complex mental processes, distractions should be avoided, as such kind of multitasking not only badly affects the brain, but also decreases 40% of your productivity by slowing your brain down.

So, generally speaking, keep in mind that our brains aren’t built to do more than one thing at a time (according to neuroscientists). But, in my opinion, it would be more precisely to say: human brain is not designed for multi-complex-tasking

Seems like the research is aligned with the CPU/GPU logic: 'login and email, you're good'; 'login and mine while video gaming, you're in trouble' :)

Hi @mistia, thanks for the comment! Yeah, good point, that makes sense... :)
