Ludwig Wittgenstein is one of 20th century's most influential philosophers. In a letter to a student, he wrote,"What is the use of studying philosophy if all it does for you is to enable you to talk with some plausibility about some abstruse questions in logic, etc., and if it does not improve your thinking about the important questions of everyday life?"

This is exactly where critical thinking comes in.

What if critical thinking could help you solve puzzles, help you make the right choices, help you to solve problems but ultimately also help you to understand life better?

Life is so full of mysteries.  Many of us have so many unanswered questions.  Some questions we might never know the answers for, but some questions could be answered if we look at them in a critical way.

Do you ever question anything that goes on in your life?

Have you ever wondered about certain things that happen in your life for whatever reason? Sometimes things happen just because it is part of life, good and bad things happy, but sometimes we feel that there are unnecessary things that happen for just no reason at all. Are you the type of person that just accepts everything that happens to you or are you the type of person that wants to know the reason behind whatever happens?

I am one of those people that wants to know the reason why things happen.  I think a lot, and I often wonder about life.  What is the real reason why we are here on earth, because ultimately we all just die.

Just like everyone else here on earth I have my own set of values and beliefs, and just like everyone else, I firmly believe that my beliefs are right.

What if my beliefs are based on things that I was taught by my parents because that is what they believed?

Throughout my life, I have had two questions that constantly kept on surfacing.

1. Why do I do things, that do not agree with my values?

I know what is right, and I know what is wrong, so why do I do things that are against my beliefs and values?  Ultimately I have now came to the conclusion that we are all just human, and it doesn't matter if we make the wrong choices because we learn from our mistakes.

2. Why did I choose the career ?

Regarding my profession, I now believe that I am where I am because it is my purpose in life.  I do not think that any other profession would  suit me, and although it is sometimes a very challenging job, I honestly believe that my calling in life is to be a teacher.  I get satisfaction as well as enjoyment from my work.

Are you happy with the way things are in your life?

If there is anything in your life that you can change now.  If money and time was no object.  What would you change in your life ? Would you still be doing the job you currently have or would you do something else that you enjoy more?

Personally I think that happiness is the ultimate goal in life.  No cars, houses, jewelry or expensive things could top happiness.  If you are a happy person, you won't care about things that cost money.

Here are a few questions to think about:

  • What will you leave behind when you die?

The one thing that we are sure of in life is that we are all going to die.  Will you be remembered at all? Would people miss you if you were no longer here? We can all change our paths.  Who you are is up to you, but there is no set way in any type of personality, so the opportunities to change yourself is absolutely endless.

  • What have you done to make a difference in someone' s life?

Have you ever done something for someone and felt good about yourself?  Would you do it again?  Is it not important to good things for others?  Just like all the bad things you do to people comes back to you in threefold, so will the good things.  You can ultimately change your life by changing the way that you think.

  • What have you done to make the world a better place?

Do you believe that you can change the world? I believe that we can all make the world a much better place.  Action speaks louder than words.  The human race is easy to talk but do we actually take action? Talk is cheap....it is time that we stand up and start to change the world together.  The tiniest gesture can motivate others to do the same.  Ever heard of paying it forward?  This could possibly be the best opportunity you have.  Just do it while you are still alive.

  • What have you done to motivate someone?

We live in a broken world.  Have you ever been motivated by anyone to do something positive? There are so many motivational speakers out there that makes a living out of motivating others.  People need motivation in their lives because they not have the support they need at home.  They are not able to motivate themselves.

Who have you motivated today?

Do you want to make a difference?

If you want to make a difference you need to change the way that you think!  Critical thinking is all about the reason behind the question.

Conclusion:

Critical thinking and emotional intelligence walks hand in hand.  Find the balance between the way that you act and the way that you think.  Once you get in the habit of critical thinking it could ultimately change your life for the better.  Ask the right questions, but also know the correct answers.

Thanks Ian. I struggled a lot with this one. Felt so jumbled up in my head. Not even sure if it makes all sense but it did make sense in my head though!😁
