Resilience: key to overcoming adversitysteemCreated with Sketch.

in #psychology5 years ago (edited)

When I heard the term Resilience for the first time I was in a classroom at the university and instantly called my attention causing a positive impact, I began to research about the topic. To understand the power of resilience we must understand its meaning and the need to adopt a resilient behavior when we face a difficult situation.

Source

It is also necessary to know that resilience is not an innate condition of people, that is, no one is born with these abilities or very rarely will have to do with a genetic inheritance, the person becomes resilient as life faces adversity and learn to succeed in this.

Resilience

In psychology, the ability of a person to overcome traumatic circumstances such as the death of a loved one, an accident, etc.

Emmy Werner, in 1995 refers to three general uses of the term resilience: good development despite high social risk; maintenance of the competences in spite of the continuous stress; and recovery after the trauma.

Recovery after trauma

If we look at the history we can easily find examples of people and entire nations that have managed to recover successfully after very traumatic processes, Europe after the Second World War, the coast of Florida and Louisiana after devastating hurricanes, different nations after natural disasters .

At the end of the Second World War, many European countries were devastated, 40 million people had died and 35 million had been injured, most of them in the USSR, Poland, Germany and Yugoslavia. Countries lost much of their industrial capacity and infrastructure, suffering from lack of food, raw materials and energy.

Source

After programs, alliances and international aid countries were recovering to overcome this traumatic situation and reach modern Europe, it was a very painful process but many countries today enjoy a healthy economy despite having been destroyed almost in its entirety.

Hurricane Katrina was one of the most destructive and the one that caused the most fatalities of the 2005 hurricane season in the Atlantic.

It is the hurricane that has caused the most economic damage, as well as one of the five deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States. Likewise, Katrina is the sixth most intense of all recorded Atlantic hurricanes. At least 1833 people died due to the hurricane itself or the subsequent floods, becoming the deadliest hurricane in the United States since Hurricane San Felipe II, 1928; the total amount of material damage was initially estimated at 108 billion dollars (2005 USD) almost four times that of the damage caused by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

Although the hurricanes hit the coast of the United States year after year, these people are replenished again and again, some leave, others temporarily evacuate but most return to face once again this adverse situation.

This courageous behavior can be defined as resilient, because no matter how many times and how hard you hit adversity you get up you keep moving forward in search of success until you find it, it is possible that some people fail to recover completely, some need psychological help for years, but I'm sure that as a group and individually many manage to overcome this positively.

Migratory crisis

A friend told me once that there is nothing so terrible to emigrate, but when you are displaced by some conflict Armed, economic situation and other reasons that force you to leave your country, you go to another country in most cases in a disadvantaged situation, you suffer from having to leave behind your roots, your friends, your family, what you have achieved for years suddenly it is no longer there and you begin to live a trauma from which it is very difficult to overcome.

In today's world, there is an unprecedented migration crisis in Africa, the Middle East, Central and South America. It is estimated that the people who left their homes in a forced way are already 68.5 million, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in its latest report Global Trends.

Case Venezuela

Venezuela is living a very pronounced diaspora, it is a migratory crisis never before experienced by our country that hits the Venezuelan family hard and tears the hearts of our brothers. There are many families that may never recover from this situation, the psychological damage inflicted by this crisis can not yet be quantified.
This process of crisis will highlight the capacity of resilience that Venezuelans have, that is when we will know what the capacity of the Venezuelan people is to overcome very difficult situations. Maybe it is nothing much compared to what the nations suffer that now have armed conflicts and that their population is displaced by these conflicts.

Resilience is what makes the difference between those who suffer depressive or suicidal behaviors and those who raise their heads in the face of adversity, stand up after the fall and achieve their dreams even though they have had a very great loss, it becomes necessary that the human being learn how to handle pain, face adversities of any magnitude, in order to get up, leave behind frustration, pain and refocus on their dreams.

Share your opinion with me, I will respond kindly to every comment, suggestion or correction you wish to make .

Have you or your family experienced any adversity that they successfully recovered from? How did you manage to regain yourself? What do you think of the global migration crisis? Has it touched you or Do you know someone who has been forced to emigrate?

We all have different levels of resiliency.
Different countries, cultures and way of living and psychological traits determine it.

Filipinos are very resilient people, it shows as evidence that even on the face of tragedy, they can still give you a smile.

@fucho80, Definitely Resilience is not inborn and inherent quality. Only time and life will teach us by creating different experiences and through these experiences we grow our Resilience Levels. Stay blessed.

Resilience , it is a characteristic that takes time to develop.
I think it goes down to mindset. The ability to get back up after getting knocked down. The ability to stand once again when you fallen. It's easy just to lay there. Sometimes laying there makes the most sense.

Personally in life I've been knocked down a lot. from the quite literal being in martial arts and getting kicked to the ground, to life when I lost lots of money, had social downfalls, and personally with lack of success.

I tend to keep a positive outlook, look at it as a challenge that is meant to be overcome, a puzzle that's waiting to be solved, and realize that today is not yesterday, tomorrow is not yet written, so why not I get back up again? why not keep on fighting? Life is short... too short to be held down.. at least that's my thought. :)

Dear @jacuzzi, thank you for stopping and reading.

Resilience, it is a characteristic that takes time to develop.

According to you, it takes time to learn from such defeats, falls or adversities, but those same situations are forming us until we reach that reclining status.

I tend to keep a positive outlook, look at it as a challenge that is meant to be overcome, a puzzle that is waiting to be solved, and realize that today is not yesterday, tomorrow is not yet written, so why not I get back up again? why not keep on fighting? It is very important in life to have a positive attitude for everything, that gives us an advantage in any adverse situation, we will be prepared to receive the blow, assimilate it and get up again.

Congratulations friend, I love that defiant attitude in the face of adversity.

Thank you my friend. What helped me. For me it was too complicated a question. I searched this information in multiple languages. Thanks for helping me out.

Thanks for helping me out.

Easy brother, we are here to help any doubt, something that you need to know and this in my possibilities, I will do it for you.

According to the dictionary resilience means in Dutch 'veerkrachtig'.

I do not agree it is something you can learn. Some people are, others aren't.

For years I worked with survivors of incest and sexual abuse.
One group really survives and goes on, one group automutilize and/or commits suicide and a very small group survives by developing multiple personalities.

To my opinion, only the first group is resilience, even if they feel not great or happy.
It has to do with our character (way more as how we are raised or are educated) if we survive trauma or even more as one.

Wooo, it's something incredible what you write, it's a very strong trauma that people who are sexually abused live with and had no idea about these statistics.

Thank you for sharing this information with us.

It is one of the strong trauma's people can suffer from. For sure not the only one.

Correct, it is not the only one but it must be a very big psychological abuse. I imagine it must be difficult to help someone after an experience like this.

I believe no one will ever heal from an experience that took place for years.
The only thing you can do is give it a place in your life, make clear that what happened was out of your hands but how you handle it is up to you.
It will be a life with ups and downs... as long as you realize this is the fact and the up will be there again.
It is something to look forward to plus the realization you are strong, a survivor, not a loser and victim.

Faith also helps a lot

It is something to look forward to plus the realization you are strong, to survivor, not to loser and victim.

What a good explanation of this, thank you you are a very kind person.

Hi @fucho80,

Unfortunately, my resilience level is too worst to consider or to take into account.

I am the sort of a person who will neither bear the sufferings of others nor of my own!

When a devastating earthquake pounded on our Gujarat state in 2001and due to its severity had its presence felt here in Chennai, a city of Tamil Nadu, in the Southern most part of India.

Unable to bear the sufferings of the people severely injured/affected post earthquake, I thought of ending my life. My thought was itself an idiotic one and for which I thought of seeking permission from the Almighty Himself. I wrote down on two chits on bits of paper with words "yes" and "no" on it.

I then shaked those 2 bits of paper inside my hands and dropped them in front of Him. The Almighty immediately made a rebuttal by giving me a fitting reply to my meaningless query. When I picked up a bit of paper with my eyes closed and opened it, it said a distinct "No".

This happened 18 yrs ago when I was 27. This cIearly showed that I acted immaturely even in that age. The point worth mentioning here is that my death wasn't going to alleviate their sufferings. So if I would have thought of going to that state to take part in the rescue operations, it would have been well and good, but I didn't.

This one thing pains me most whenever any tragedy happens, but the positive development is that I remember of collecting some donation amount when a similar tragedy occurred again, but I don't remember the year exactly.

@fucho80, please pardon me for posting this comment lately.

Even when you say that it is very difficult to measure your resilience capacity, I think that the fact of consulting the Almighty and accepting his decision about your life made you understand what is the best way to act in cases like these. The capacity of resilience in many cases is the product of the formation of your character to go through various difficult situations.

This one thing pains me most whenever any tragedy happens, but the positive development is that I remember of collecting some donation amount when a similar tragedy occurred again, but I do not remember the year exactly.

According to you, now whenever there is a tragedy or something similar you will understand that it is much better to help when it comes to others, and to fight to overcome everything when we are directly involved.

Thank you for this great comment, for sharing your life experience.

Take care.

Thank you for your kind words @fucho80.

Resilience is key to overcoming adversity !
The above sentence is inspiring, but to be honest, I know in my heart that I am helplessness and acceptance it, because if I don't have Resilience, I will be lost and die in the loss.
My place of residence is a small island. There is often a typhoon. When there is no typhoon, there will be drought/water shortage. Therefore, if during the drought,
We received economic sanctions from a major international country and cannot import or export, the domestic economy also It will collapse in an instant , because we maybe will have a crisis of water shortage.
Immigration is a last resort, a self-rescue method.
because living in here, if it is extremely difficult to survive, if I can go abroad , I think it will better than staying here, I will escape to other place.
..........................

Hello friend @cloudblade, thank you for your comment.

I must tell you that the mere fact of going through all those situations that you describe later in your comment makes you a survivor, you are a reclining human being, I believe that all of us have that capacity, only that some decide not to continue fighting and surrender.

Immigration is a last resort, a self-rescue method.
because living in here, if it is extremely difficult to survive, if I can go abroad, I think it will be better than staying here, I will escape to other place.

Nobody wants to leave their land, their roots so I think you're right, emigration is the last resort we take forced. I do not blame those who leave fleeing from some conflict, it is our instinct of survival.

Thanks for your comment, take care.

Where do you live @cloudblade?

Hi @cloudblade,

"My place of residence is a small island. There is often a typhoon. When there is no typhoon, there will be drought/water shortage."

My God, it is like walking on a sharp sword, losing balance, will be falling down into a deep gorge! Walking will cause traumatic injury and falling will cause imminent death!

If we move out, we will be emotionally hit. If we don't, our lives will be drastically hit. Some will choose the former and some the latter. For some, that matters more and for some, this matters MOST!
