Daniel Goleman wrote a number 1 best seller

in #psychology6 years ago

Daniel Goleman made a huge splash on the educational and business worlds when his book Emotional Intelligence was first published in 1996. Although social and emotional intelligence had been a subject of research for a number of years, Daniel Goleman put emotional Intelligence the concept out there. The world lapped it up!

The book was a kind gift from a colleague at a Christmas break up party. His comments, To Angela, One of the most emotionally intelligent persons I know, took me by surprise. You see I had not given any thought to emotional intelligence in 1998, let alone considered the amount of emotional intelligence inside me. This changed changed fast when I read the book. It was like a light bulb turning on! I not only agreed with Daniel Goleman's ideas I used them in my professional work. I believe that crucial emotional competencies like confidence, persistence and motivation can be learned and developed from childhood onwards.

Goleman strongly argued that academic intelligence had little to do with emotional life and people with high IQs can be stunningly poor pilots of their private lives. (P.34) He cites many studies in his book, one being a ten year study of valedictorians and salutatorians of an Illinois High School in 1981. It was found that the students continuing to score very highly in college. But in the workforce approximately 20% of these successful academics achieved they had only achieved high levels of success in the workforce.

At this time, emotional intelligence was not a known factor as it is today. It is evident that a good amount of both academic and emotional intelligence is the 'magic bean' for a successful work career and happy personal life.

If you are a parent you can help your child develop motivation, empathy and how to tap into his/her feelings. If you are a teacher you have the means to assist your students to learn essential components of emotional intelligence.

We have so much to offer our children. Adults can make a positive difference.

Cheers

this is so interesting @angiemitchell, whats needed is to get this book into the hands of every teacher and parent!

True @janton, but it is very much an academic kind of book, something along this line that is much more practical and easy to read. This is why teacher and parent talks and training are effective.

oh I see, excellent! I can see how it can change lives.

If many of us made real use of our emotional intelligence, how many problems would be avoided?
