Growing Number of Recent Prostitution Stings Fuels Legalization Debate Once Again

“We cannot afford to chase people around who do things that we think are harmful to themselves,...If we had unlimited funds, we could go after every tiny societal problem.” - retired St. Lucie County judge, Cliff Barnes

The idea of legalizing prostitution is “absolutely absurd” to some U.S. politicians, while there are others who have been considering such a change and working toward making it happen. Recent raids on massage parlors and other venues has also prompted sex workers themselves to call for decriminalization.

Some of the common arguments in favor of ending the criminalization of prostitution are that it would improve working conditions for those in the industry, that it upholds the rights of the two consenting adults who are making a business arrangement, and that it would help to reduce the exploitation of many individuals.

"We aim to repeal statutes that criminalize consensual sexual exchange between adults and create a system that erases prostitution records for sex workers…so they can move on with their lives," - NYC Dem Senators J Ramos and J Salazar

There has been outrage at the suggestion from both sides, with bureaucrats insisting that such a move would be absurdly appalling to them, but so too would a move to likely end the war on drugs or war on terror. Lawmakers aren't the only ones who have voiced their discontent, some members of law enforcement have also ridiculed the idea.

"Drugs and prostitution, what a way for governments to make revenue. I think we've lost our humanity," - Sheriff B York

But, where is the humanity in arresting people over their peaceful consumption habits?

Lawmakers and law enforcers are shocked that such an idea is even being proposed. Allow grown adults to decide for themselves if they want to enter into a sexual encounter, peacefully and voluntarily? They just cannot bear to fathom such a future. Much of the public is also against the prospect, insisting that it isn't okay to stand by and allow two adults to enter into such an arrangement.

Early efforts to legalize prostitution had allegedly been seeking to purge organized crime in the industry, limit human trafficking altogether, and improve worker conditions by giving them access to healthcare and police services etc. However, it's suggested that there hasn't been much success to achieve those goals and that instead, in places around Europe where it is regulated, it's allegedly fueled a major multi-billion dollar industry as a result.

Despite the restrictions and efforts to stop this behavior, the truth is that regardless of the war against this profession, it's still widely prevalent. Advocates for sex workers in the U.S. have previously attempted to file a federal lawsuit, seeking to legalize prostitution. But it still remains illegal, with Nevada being the one exception.

There have been many bills that have been introduced over the years, in a number of states, that have been seeking to decriminalize or legalize prostitution.

They've been introduced in areas such as Maine, New York, Rhode Island, D.C., and other regions. Surprisingly, legislation has also been introduced recently that's seeking to reverse that stance in Nevada, and newly criminalize prostitution in the region.

It's also suspected that we might see this topic become a larger issue on the media landscape soon, with presidential candidates in 2020.

Most people would agree that it should be legal to sell something that you own. Most people would also agree that you own your own body. Most people agree that selling your labour should be legal.

Yet most people do not support legalized prostitution.

How is that logically consistent?

Agreed.

Agreed

I think voluntary prostitution should be legal. Of course forced (or otherwise made) prostitution would still be illegal, as selling something you don't own is a no no.

Edit: Sorry, I used the wrong word above. Prostitution should be decriminalized, not legalized. The states does NOT have any legitimate authority over my body, period.

It's mine.

I own myself.

if only they'd separate endorsing the freedom of others to chose, with endorsing or supporting the action itself :/

I actually wrote about this. There were some good arguments for both sides.

Personally, I think it should be legalized. Special interest groups don't want it to be legalized because they use sex as a tool to control people (mostly men) and get them to do things that they do not want to do.

This is far more powerful than any tax revenue they can generate from legalizing sex work.

thanks for the feedback :) apprec u stopping by!

Some cities have decriminalized it. Philadelphia is one. Phily also completely decriminalized pot. Yes, they don't want to make these voluntary exchanges between consenting adults decriminalized because then how would they justify their officer numbers, budgets, etc.?!

Imagine a world with security and investigative services that were all private and were only used for actual victim crimes. It's possible. Bounty hunters, Private Investigators, and most attorneys are already all private. Why stop there? Let's privatize the entire thing and make those involved all equal under the law as well!

wasn't aware philly made that move, thanks for sharing that info!
and agreed!

Oh my gosh think of all the tax money they could make if they legalize prostitution. So far the general public is not on board and that's probably why they don't. A lot of cops are serviced by prostitutes so they're not going to bust them. I remember years ago talking to a cop once in Hardee's restaurant about a prostitute who had approached me at Hardee's for services.
Of course I declined the offer. But when I told the cop about it he responded well they got to eat too!

From the government's perspective, this would be terrible. Males who provide most of the tax revenue, would be less inclined to start families or work hard because sex is no longer the carrot dangling in front of the donkey.

Less work = Bad for government
No children = Very bad for government

What makes you think males are so inclined or eager to start families today? Quite the opposite. Attitudes of today's women have made men more red pilled in their attitude. Also government has not stopped Roe V Wade. They are not too concerned about the missing workforce from abortion so I doubt they would be concerned about less babies from hanging with prostitutes. Actually it would probably get men sexed up to have more babies. It is just immoral and goes against God's law. Thanks.

It is a sad day when the first thought on something is tax it... It was true patriotic Americans that ended that process against a tyrannical government.

It is unfortunate to see how quickly the weak minded can be brainwashed into supporting tyranny.
