Are CryptoKitties on the blockchain?

Yes. The game is on Ethereum.

Unfortunately, Ethereum is has Proof-of-Work as its consensus algorithm, which makes it very slow to play games on. Every transaction in the game also costs a little bit of money. I haven’t played CryptoKitties but a friend of mine has. In his opinion, the game ground to a halt in January 2018 when the price of Ether and transaction volume on Ethereum peaked.

It is very clear that Ethereum is best suited for Decentralized Finance applications rather than gaming that typically involves a lot of low-value transactions. That’s because Proof-of-Work is designed for security rather than transaction volume.

Game designers should consider the Steem blockchain for games rather than a PoW chain like Ethereum. The most successful game built on top of Steem so far is Splinterlands which has been running on Steem without any kind of problems whatsover the whole time it has existed. Steem has no direct transaction fees although it does require a one off payment to be made to purchase Steem Power (conferring Resource Credits) for an account to be able to transact on it. But transactions on Steem are cheap and fast because Steem has Delegated-Proof-of-Stake as the type of its consensus algorithm.
