STEEM-POWERED HACKATHON - PAST PROJECTS & UPDATED LOGO

in #programming7 years ago

Thank you for all the support on our previous posts - Introduction 1 by me and Introduction 2 by my friend and co-organizer @sphinx.

This post should give you an insight on last year's hackathon (synt.hcks 2016) which was organized by our seniors in high school.

But before that, we updated our logo!

Last Year's Theme:

The theme for synt.hacks 2016 was 'Improving Health'. All projects were supposed to be made around this theme and if not they would lose a significant chance at winning. The theme was made taking into account the level/skill set of participants that included students of our school from middle school and high school. Most of the middle school students knew how to code in HTML, scratch and for the arduino, mostly because that's what was being taught to them in their computer science classes. The high school students knew a variety of languages, HTML, JAVA, PHP, Python, and C#.

The Winning Projects:

Middle School Category (Grades 6-8):

The winning team had made a robot using Lego's Mindstorm kit that was provided by our school as part of its Robotics Class. This robot would fit on your hand and could help a blind person navigate and simplify daily tasks. The robot would give distinct signals such as tapping your hand when an object is nearby. Based on the proximity of the object, the tapping increases in intensity. Oh, and don't worry, the tapping doesn't hurt at all. Another functionality of the robotic arm was that it could sense basic colors and report them to the wearer by making distinct noises. Since this was a prototype, the various modules had to be called by the wearer but these can be easily controlled by voice or gestures.

The runners up had made an inventory-management system for pharmaceutical dispensaries using Python. The only negative aspect of this was that the database was hard-coded. Yet, for their category their project was quite good.

The other projects from this category were mainly websites that had information about various diseases, its symptoms, and general measures that should be taken against it.

High School Category(Grades 9-12):

Surprisingly, there were two winning teams under the high school category last year. The first winning team had created a chatbot in JAVA using IBM's supercomputer Watson. The chatbot was supposed to behave like a doctor and give its user information about various diseases and its symptoms.

The second winning team had created a video game that could detect the probability of the player being color blind. The player plays from the POV of a vehicle which moves at a constant speed. Along the road, there are signs which contain numbers in the form of colored dots. The player must type the right number and the final results are given at the end of the road.

The runners up for this category had also created a video game in the style of a Pokemon game. The player has to fight off enemies like various kinds of junk food - pizzas, burger, fries etc. To do this, the player can choose to do any one of 4 exercises per turn to burn off the calories of the enemy food. After the player's turn, the enemy food can give a variable amount calories to the player. The final objective is to completely burn out the enemy food before it gives you too many calories. This was actually made by my team, and I was the programmer.

That's it for this post, my next post about synt.hacks would be about how we're (organizing team) are planning to make changes for this year's event.
