Sorry Everyone, No PM Feature in the Short-Term for Steemit.com

in #privatemessages8 years ago (edited)

I had been telling people in comments that the PM feature was being worked on. That it was coming. Don't worry it's coming... several github issues have been opened to get this feature. I was sure it was on its way....

But alas, this is not the case. I just wanted to let everyone know there are no plans from Steemit Inc. to develop the PM feature anytime soon, at least not for the 1.0 roadmap. It's a "to-be-determined" feature that isn't regarded as that important for Steemit Inc. right now.

What do you think about the PM feature to improve connectivity and get people to stay on Steemit.com more?

sneak said there are no plans to add it right now in discussing his vision for Steemit Inc. last night on SteemSpeak. You can listen to the talk below. He said there is busy.org, steemit.chat and discord for chatting and didn't see a priority for it on Steemit.com.

Again, sorry to everyone to whom I said the PM feature was on it's way. I was sure this would have been a priority, but I was wrong.

Maybe if enough of us make noise about the PM feature, they will listen to the community and get it implemented anyways.

What say you?

Do you want the PM feature?

If so, please consider:

1) Resteeming this post and get more people aware

or even better...

2) Make your own post asking for the PM feature!

If many people make a post requesting the PM/DM feature, I don't think they can ignore the community about this feature that we all want, right? Even if its not on the official roadmap, we can get features added by all of us voicing the same desire :) I hope... LOL.

It's up to us to speak up and voice what we want on Steemit. :) Let's speak!

Thank you!

That's disappointing... I think in terms of developing the appeal of steemit as a social media platform you must have embedded features like image hosting and private messaging. That's a void that needs filling. The premise of steemit and steem is complex enough as it is, so if we continue to have fragments of features hosted on external websites it just adds to the difficulty of pitching the platform to new users.

Well said! Thanks for the feedback.

@busy.org does have PM feature as it was mentioned by @steevc, but it's just some early tests offchain features to work on user retention, PM on the blockchain might come on the next hardforks, it's actually there but not working properly.
it will not only be a key for user retention but will allow something not mentioned there, it's the ability to have a real marketplace.
Escrow + PM = Marketplace

How is steem implementing PM on the blockchain?
Does anyone have a paper on how a block is constructed?

With the blockchain being visible by all, it is not very private. Which method is steem going to try?

Simple and short answer: Yes, a PM feature would be cool to have.

More complex consideration: If you back out to take the 50,000-foot perspective, what is Steemit's ultimate ambition/purpose... and I mean 3, 5, 10 years down the road?

IF this wants to become an uncensored, peer curated social network... that's going to be a harder sell to those outside what one might call a dedicated cryptocurrency/anarchist core... someone who's just a solid and worthy content provider who blogs and has a following is going to want an interface where everything works in one spot, not as a result of having to use 37 add-on apps. That's just time consuming, annoying and too much learning curve to be viable on a large scale. These people will (mostly) want "open the window, type, publish, promote to social media, be done."

Again, just my opinion, but a large part of the reason Crackbook rules the world is that "everything is there;" there is no need to go anywhere else for groups, photos, PMs, hobbies, videos, business pages, live chat and so forth... and I'm not dismissing the value of decentralization here... more asking the question of what does Steemit want to BE? And how is that served?

Decentralize the data, not the ability to interact with it through various functionality spread across different sites, as that is the bad kind of decentralization that doesn't make things better. Thanks for the great feedback as usual.

Communities are a priority. Yet, communication within the community will only be available via a 3rd party site (discord,steemit.chat). Really doesnt make sense to me. How can that not be a priority if communities on the platform are?

Just one more reason why I lean towards busy.org for attentiveness to users needs.

Yeah... I guess forget about steemit.com, send everyone to busy.org instead lol.

LOL, it may be premature for that, but from what I can see from busy.org they're ahead of the game in UI / UX. They have less to worry about than steemit.inc does, so it's not surprising they can focus entirely on front end.

It's important to keep in mind they'd be nowhere if not for the graphene backend.

Absolutely. I have said in the Discussions podcast that Steemit Inc develops the backend, and Busy will be more for the frontend. If we have our answer, no front end PM for Steemit.com, then yeah, send people to busy.org instead. They have more features that people want.

I've decided that as important as PM is, my new cause is a block feature. With this you could stop people like @asshole (who mercifully seems to have disappeared) or this new troll @livemoral who's bugging everybody now. A block feature would stop them from profiting and/or preventing you from doing the same.

Yes, I have wanted a block feature for a long time as well. No reason we can't want more than one thing. PMs are a basic for enhanced inter-connectivity on a site. Thanks for the feedback.

I couldn't agree more! I find going to a different site to chat annoying. I'm not signing up for busy just to interact.

Blocking on the blockchain... seems wrong... or I am just confused.
Do you feel that the steem blockchain should be able to be moderated for extreme harassers?
Or is it that steemit needs more privacy features/settings?

Not blocking the blockchain. Why would you think that?

Blocking people from bothering you, like mute, but more power to reject them from your property (blog page). Trolls can go bye bye back under their bridge for attention.

Calling people trolls is not nice. And block will not work against the wrong people. Nothing will. In my opinion, you should work on a system that ensures equality & fairness to ALL small and large. The time that it takes to try and control users of steemit like blockchain police when there are many places to go to plug into the blockchain, could be used for good purpose other than to try and control what cannot be controlled. The people cannot be controlled. It's a pointless venture that will only lead to louder voices. Equality however will lead to immediate peace between all users. Throughout history when people are silenced, they appear to find new ways and again louder tactics to use. This results in a virtual network wars because the efforts and priorities were in the wrong place. Work on peace. Work on Equality measures please.

Please describe your vision of equality as it might be applied to steemit, I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at.

Block feature would be just another way to silence people who post and deserve true equality on posts earnings and monetary value. Tho some would use it well, to others it will be just another feature to mass abuse. When a "Big Guy" makes a post telling their HUGE following to block a user, is that fair? As new users come in they are being flagged and attacked already by existing features, causing them bad experiences and to leave the blockchain moments after entry. Again, making more features for "Virtual Elites" to abuse with mass followings will not be a solution. It will result only in the loss of more users, and existing users. When all small are cast aside with no voice because options were made that can be abused, there will be no "Crowd Funding" going on for any elites. They will remain going in the same circle with the same following. Followers losing interest over time, and leaving, too. Equality in my vision is where everyone is seen, and folks just have the choice to control themselves not others by making the choice to simply close the page and move along. In the end it would become just an every growing, unstoppable chain allowed to grow together in peace. No one man, can gain the votes of every man. Most know this as fact. So the more you make, the more you have to sweat waiting to see if it's 50/50 between the people. Chancing loss. Leave it alone maybe, and work on flags so the equality balances out for all instead of on controls out weighing side.

We will eventually have it, and it would be nice to have IMO. I am being patient with the progress being made on Steemit, I think the devs are working hard and doing a good job, so its quite easy to be patient.

Well I do think a PM feature should be implemented. It's a social network after all. However being able to chat makes it less urgently, but eventually it should be added, if you ask me.

Naturally I'd like to see the ability to PM sooner than later, but I'm hopeful that there is a method to their prioritization of other features. Could it be they want encrypted on-chain messaging, and they are waiting for #fabric to be implemented to create a scalable foundation first?

woulda been cool!

Isn't the chat fine, in the meantime?
