Agroforestry and forest rehabilitation will be intensified to prevent floods and landslides this year.

Based on the analysis of 2017 land cover change, the area of forest cover in upstream area is still relatively good, which is about 60% or 9,785.18 hectares (ha) of total land cover area 13,826,7 ha. The broad category of critical land and very critical 2.078.1 ha
The Directorate General of Watershed Management and Protection Forest (PDASHL) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry Ida Bagus Putera Parthama said the ministry has done land rehabilitation (RHL) since 2010 at 383 ha in the watershed area of Bomo and Glondong watershed.

Looking ahead, KLHK will implement an agroforestry scheme of 30 hectares and RHL in a forest area of 1,500 ha in the framework of flood mitigation, "he said on Monday (25/6/2018).

The flash floods in Banyuwangi last week (Thursday, 21/06/2018), has resulted in a number of sub-districts including the Bomo Basin and Glondong Watershed inundated with mud and volcanic materials. KLHK recorded the area of water catchment (DTA) flood in both watersheds 13,876.7 ha with total critical land of 2,078.1 ha.
High rainfall also leads to an increase in surface runoff that exceeds capacity in some DTAs, a.l. at Dta Badeng 26.2 m3 per second (3.8 m3 streaming capacity per second), Kumbo DTA 41.9 m3 per second (5.2 m3 drilling capacity per second), and DTA Binaung 37.4 m3 per second (capacity streaming 5.3 m3 per second.

Meanwhile, Acting Director of Planning and Evaluation of Watershed Control Yuliarto said KLHK will invite people to plant types of plants that have deep roots, high canopy density, and high evapotranspiration.

Based on the research result of Research and Development of Watershed Management Technology (BPPTPDAS) Surakarta, there are 47 types of plants that have the potential to prevent landslides, a.l. pewter, cempedak, breadfruit, mimba, pecan, jackfruit, cashew, aren, resin, bamboo, tayuman, butterfly, cinnamon, trengguh, kaliandra red, kaliandra putih, kenanga, johar, and sonokeling.

We will also work with local governments and relevant agencies to identify disaster-prone areas through reviewing the standard operating system procedure maps and disseminating them to related parties, "he said.
