RE: A Walkthrough Of Some Of Our Australian Prepping Supplies: A Discussion About The Advantages Of A Deep Pantry And A Look At Our Food, Water, Sanitation & Fuel Supplies.
Thanks for the comment @bchick. Yes we find havings everything out on shelving makes it easier to rotate stock and also easier to find things. When in tubs, you easily forget what you've got and which tub it's in... so order is a good objective.
Sorry I'm not sure what you're referring to with the ham radio. There isn't a radio in this setup... that I'm aware of!
Oh I thought I heard something about a radio. Others would have to have one too if you were going to invest in one.
The setup is also in your face as a reminder to always be ready.
I'll have to listen to the video again! I dont recall mentioning a radio. I did talk briefly about the signalling mirror as a crude form of communication... perhaps that comment got you thinking of radios 😊
Agree that you'd need the other party willing and able to participate in radio comms for that to work.
No doubt you are right about what I heard and how I interpreted it.
When we first read Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse we were interested in ham radios and we got ham radio kits for our grandchildren, since it was our son who pointed out the book to us. But that was a community of people and they needed them to communicate with each other.
So how, or why, would you use the signaling mirrors?
Certainly, when prearranged, radios can be useful but for these purposes, those hand held two-way walkie talkies would be best. Grab 2 units, slect a channel and away you go. Useful when just moving around acreage too without using a mobile phone.
A signalling mirror can alert others of your position by reflecting the sun onto them. The mirror has holes that you look through and you hold your thumb up in front of it to line the sunlight up between you and the observer. The natural movement of your hand will make the reflection flicker and draw attention.
Because it's fairly targeted you can avoid other observers from seeing your reflection but that's more a strategic consideration. A simple and effective way for example to attract the attention of a rescue chopper during daylight conditions where no other communication is available.
Thanks. Interesting was to learn how to communicate in certain conditions.
Just what a community like this is good for. Thanks for your comments and contributions. Much appreciated.
