#72: Kidnap
......................................................................................................................................................................................
The young vet’s name was Chad.

Chad counted himself as very fortunate that he had almost literally stumbled into Shelby one night at a bookstore. Too bad the bookstore had since closed. He had enjoyed spending time there after Shelby had fixed him up with the new mono-wheel.

Chad had recently been transferred from SamSnead to RiverCity. He stayed at a local veteran’s organization similar the VFW or the American Legion. The purpose of that Veteran’s Organization was the same although the name was different. It took care of vets who were down and out.

It wasn’t fancy. In fact it was so much like a military dorm that it brought back fond memories. There were rows of triple stacked bunkbeds each with a footlocker. The latrine was communal and there was a small kitchen. Other than a day-room that was about it.

Naturally. Chad had every available niche in his space filled with books. He shared them freely with anyone who asked. He kept the dayroom reading rack stuffed.

Today it was Chad’s turn for the beer run. He was happy to do so. It got him out of the dorm. He was happily rolling along the sidewalk on the way to the local beer store when a van pulled crossways in front of him, right across the sidewalk, cutting him off.

Chad hadn’t been moving very fast. Good thing too or he would have crashed into the van, it was that close. He had just managed to stop without hitting it when something hit him from behind. As he was loosing consciousness he noticed that the side door of the van had opened. He was pushed inside.

McCarthy sat reading the file. “This is very interesting but it raises more questions than it answers.”

“Yes Director” the viper minion was nervous. Director McCarthy had been very unstable of late. There wasn’t much telling what he might do. Everyone was very wary in his presence.

“Can anything more be learned from the subject?” McCarthy asked.

“We don’t think so sir.” the minion replied.

“You don’t think?” McCarthy scowled at the man. “You don’t think?”

“No sir.” the sweating minion replied “ There is nothing more we can learn from him”.

“Very well.” McCarthy turned his attention back to the report. “Dispose of him then.”

“Yessir” the Minion replied thinking that McCarthy was one stone cold bastard.

Chad was awake...barely. He remembered being snatched off a public street and passing out. The next thing he knew he woke up strapped to a table. His memory was a bit hazy after that. He remembered countless questions, injections and pain.

Oh yes...the pain. Much pain.

He opened his eyes when a man walked into the room.

“Sorry to have to do this son” the man said.

The man drew a pistol and pointed it at Chad.

The last thing Chad saw was the muzzle flash.
