AIPAC Seeks To Destroy Free Speech, Wants To Outlaw Right To Boycott Israel With Up To 20 Years In Prison
Glen Greenwald is sounding the alarm bells against AIPAC and Israel in his latest piece describing their push to outlaw our First Amendment right to protest.
The bill is being pushed in the Senate, is co-sponsored by both a Democrat and Republican and would make it a felony for Americans to support the international boycott against Israel for its occupation of Palestine.
Incredibly, the bill seeks a minimum civil penalty of $250,000 and a maximum criminal penalty of $1 million and 20 years in prison for anyone convicted of participating in the boycott.
The bill was was drafted with the assistance of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) (who says passage of the bill is one of their top priorities), and it is perhaps one of the most pressing threats against free speech seen in modern times.
On the one hand, a bill like this is as Orwellian as they come, and to see the system attempt to pass such an afront to American culture and values (which are "officially" humanitarian values) is one of the more frightening developments to come post 9/11, especially consideing how much control the Jewish lobby has over U.S. lawmakers.
On the other hand, the proposed law just might be the slap in the face Americans have needed to wake up and stop blindly supporting the Jewish state no matter what it does.
Pro-Israel politicos like to argue that we need to support Israel because they are the only "civilized culture" in the Middle East.
Does fining a person a minimum of a quater of a million dollars and throwing them in jail for up to 20 years for participating in a boycott sound civilized to you?
I can assure you there is a long line of people who would much prefer you lop off a hand than suffer the brutality proposed in this bill.
Anyone could know that this proposal would be met with hostility and outrage, and to propose it shows us that the state of Israel is becoming desparate.
