6th Graders Vote to Cut the Income Tax
Glad to join Ms. Shirley Jackson’s 6th Grade class today at Minot Consolidated School as I lead them through a mock legislature.
Appointing them each members of the Maine House of Representatives for the day, the legislature moved forward on Rep. Olson’s proposal to abolish the state income tax.
Initially, prospects of passage looked dim as 6 of the 8 members of the Taxation Committee voted against the bill. The bill failed its first vote in the House by a vote of 10 to 7.
But the Senate sent the bill back to the House with an amendment to lower the state income tax to 3%, instead of abolishing it completely. The newly amended bill passed unanimously in the House, and went onto the Governor.
The Governor, however, vetoed the bill for “not going far enough,” but the House unanimously overrode his veto.
Thank you to the 6th Graders of Minot Consolidated School for their thoughtful and energetic participation. And thank you additionally for lowering our taxes.
For Liberty!
