NOT YET UHURU ZIMBABWE!
The world has been awash with Zimbabwe news making headlines of impeding freedom from Mugabe's three decades grip on power. The last week has been eventful with Mugabe firing then Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa over allegations he wanted to forcefully remove him from power. All this advice coming from the wife of the President Grace.
Grace Mugabe has let her intentions known that she wishes to succeed her 93 year old husband as President after he leaves office. This situation had created a rift in the ruling ZANU-PF party with the old guard including war veterans and army generals who fought alongside Mugabe in the war for the independence of that country on one side known as Lacoste. Grace led the opposing New Generation known as G40.
Mugabe without a clear succession plan created the standoff amongst these two groups which culminated in the alleged poisoning of the Vice president and his subsequent sucking. He has come back with full force with the army backing him to take over the reigns.
Recent events show that the army is in control but they have denied that its a coup but only a military operation to rid the geriatric of thieves and criminals so says the army. On this list includes Saviour Kasukuwere, Jonathan Moyo, Ignatious Chombo et al. All these are serving ministers in the current government.The army seems to want Mnangagwa reinstated and lead until elections on an agreed date.
The burning point is what does a ZANU-PF battle which involves the national army have for the people of Zimbabwe? People who have only known one president for 37 years. The mood in the country is both of some happiness that there might be change on the horizon but still anxious of continued ZANU-PF leadership. The economy has been in constant recession for over a decade with massive unemployment and cash shortages. The country's currency was erroded and the US Dollar, Rand and other currencies are currently legal tender.
What needs to be seen is whether the army is going to bring democracy back to this country or its just a vanguard of ZANU-PF successionism.
