You are right, one people get into an extreme mind set be it religious or political then you have a real problem. The trouble it they feel they are the voice of reason.
As insane as it sounds, Trump was correct about Charlottesville, both sides were at fault for the reasons you outline. But because the hatred for the white supremacists people will not blame the so called "anti fascists" side. Even though they are in masks, and attacking people.
The real irony is the far left with the SJW and Antifa movements appear to be what they despise. Using racism, violence and controlling speech to meet their "peaceful" goals.

I just wish the governments would stop pandering to the extreme left in the universities as it makes it worse.
As you say, people need to start to listen to the other side and learn from it, they do not need to like what they hear but actually there is always some truths that are present.
With the current trends we are in for a world of pain unless this gets sorted. From religions fighting to political ideology it will all come to a head and many more people will die or get badly hurt.
How do I get off this ride, it is no longer fun :)
