Khashoggi Murder Being Investigated by the U.N.

in #politics6 years ago (edited)

The United Nation is officially getting involved in the murder of Washington post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Friday, the United Nations Human Rights Office announced an investigation is underway into the infamous murder. It's about time, no?

It's been nearly 4 full months since Khashoggi was murdered on October 2, 2018 at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Initially, he was just missing, but Turkey was click to accuse Saudi Arabia of orchestrating his assassination with a 15-man hit team. It turns out they were right.

Saudi Arabia denied it at first, but then eventually said h did die, but it was an accident. Eventually, they admitted he was killed, but by "rogue" operatives. The circumstantial evidence suggests the Crown Prince himself, Mohammad bin Saudi (MBS) was involved. The CIA even came out and said it's unlikely he didn't give the order himself. But Saudi Arabia has denied this.

Several Saudi nationals have been arrested in Saudi Arabia, and they have been sanctioned from many Western nations. Trump has maintained support to MBS, doubting the claims made by the CIA.

The U.N. said an independent panel is being set up to establish "the nature and extent of states’ and individuals’ responsibilities for the killing". Agnes Callamard, the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, said she would travel to Turkey next week for an "independent international inquiry" into the Khashoggi murder.

Joining Callamard are Duarte Nuno Vieira, "a pathology expert and professor at the department of legal and forensic medicine at Coimbra University", and British barrister Helena Kennedy. The visit to Turkey will last between January 28 to February 3. Their report will be delivered to the UN Human Rights Council on June 19th.

So far it appears many "fall guys" have taken the blame, while MBS has escaped any consequences. Maybe that will change with the U.N. But I doubt it. I wouldn't trust every that comes from the U.N., but that doesn't mean it's all bullshit. Maybe they will just restate what we already know from what Turkey has said.

The U.N. might be able to make a statement of what actually happened, but nothing will happen with their word alone. Israel has been condemned for years with their human rights violations, but nothing happens. It seems the international community is only moved to act when the U.S. gets involved in some way. And that sure as hell doesn't seem like it's going to happen with this case.

Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.
