The political downtrend in Nigeria: A glorious past, a wasteful present and an uncertain future

When the chants of Sai Buhari or Sai Atiku fills the air, I feel sad. I feel sad because a nation of over one hundred and eighty million people keep recycling the same set of old crooks, old crooks who won't just simply die!

I wish no one death, not even a bad person, however, when we look at it critically, what have they offered us asides failed promises, corruption and empty portfolios. The "I will do this and that" if elected speech which has done nothing for the country yet sent young men and women to their early graves all in the name of being a supporter.

Do most of their armed supporters even believe in their masters? No! However, stomach infrastructure has made them so easy to manipulate to the extent that they have become brainless zombies who kill for people without a second thought.

Has anyone even bothered to look at what these people have done for their country with the little power and authority they had before seeking to hold political offices? Is it sane that the highest political position in the land, the post of the first citizen, the president, has a minimum eligibility of just school leaving certificate?

How can we move forward when our laws were designed to shift us backwards? How can a politician embezzle billions and we offer the person six months jail term or an option of a fine, a fine which is not up to a million naira? This is the year 2018 which ia about to end and a modern day country is using a constitution drafted in the old millennium?

We have been told to always choose between the lesser of the two evils, why can't we find the good and choose. We say the old ones are evil and the young ones are inexperienced, then which way do we face?

Have I gotten to the worse part yet? No! Some of our religious leaders have deviated from the truth, instead they prefer to just simply march to Aso rock in the name of a unified religious organization and collect brown envelopes and absorb the politicians of their sins.

Some years ago, the Saudi king came to Nigeria for check up, now, we barely trust the healthcare system. We have amazing doctors, nothing to work with. More lives could be saved, but the money that could have been used for it has been embezzled by someone without a conscience.

We spent the last four years blaming the past government for the mistakes of the current government and now, with the elections around the corner, the selective witch hunting has begub once again. The gullible minds have gone back to the usual "at least we can manage this one" talks, the same talks which has gotten us nowhere.

Only in this place will we see ex convicts coming back to hold sensitive positions. Only in this place will we see bigotry without caution. Only in this place will some people be exempt from obvious corrupt charges because they are part of the ruling party while others are guilty for less because they're the opposition.

Rigging is now done in broad day light and obvious evidence is denied. Is it our president still ruling us or is it look alike from Sudan as claimed? We don't even know anymore.
The people prefer to run to other countries because they don't want to be the scape goats in a revolution, however, we also forget that those people have had to fight for what they believe in.

These people don't believe we should be educated, because if we receive education, we become a threat, hence their nonchalance at the persistent strikes. These people don't care about your health, when the people are strong, they can fight. These people don't care about your wellbeing, when the people are well fed and comfortable, the politicians lose their relevance.

Imagine impoverishing the people with hunger and giving back a fraction of what belongs to the people originally all in the name of a bribe, just for the people to vote for them to loot some more.
Nnamdi Azikiwe would roll in his grave at the thought of what Nigeria has become. The labor of our heroes past is now in vain.

Alas! They have eaten our futures and made us believe they're doing us a favor.

It's sad to know that we are still in a stage where we recycle leaders time after time. The old words used to cajole us are twisted and given back to us. I hope we have a rethink soon.

It's time to move from our mediocracy
