In The Land Of Freedom: Going To Jail Over Missing School
There are many parents across the United States who have faced fines and even jail time because of their child's decision to skip school. In the land that's supposed to be the platform for a plethora of freedom. One mother even died while she was in jail, serving a 48-hr sentence because of truancy fines she needed to pay on behalf of her daughter. These 'truancy' are fines that the parents can be left with after their children miss school.
My, How Times Have Changed
Is extorting parents and tying up valuable legal resources on matters like this, really within the best interest of the people? Especially considering there are truly violent criminals out there, and other truly pressing matters that could benefit from being given precedent over a silly matter like missed school.
The fact that jail is now involved with missing classes isn't anything new, it's been happening for years, but the first time that I just heard about it was this week and I really shouldn't have been as shocked as I was. Some cities actually have rules in place that could send parents to jail for up to 90 days if their children skips too many classes.
Thousands of people have already been sent to jail over this issue.
One would hope that there would be ways of addressing the negligence of parents, without involving the threat of force. In fact, evidence shows that supportive measures are often much more beneficial than punitive ones. The children have the cognitive capacity to comprehend that they should be in class during the time that class is in session, and if they make the decision to leave then they should be the one to suffer any consequences; not the parent. Perhaps this forceful approach will only fuel more parents to look to alternative options for educating their children; like homeschooling.
According to many education experts themselves, there is no concrete data available presently that even suggests that using these fines and threats of jail time is effective when it comes to addressing the issue of skipping school. At present, 50 states already have rules on the books surrounding truancy laws and the severity of punishment varies from state to state.

That's dispicable- my parents would have been destitute had they been forced to pay truancy fines in regards to my very selective attendance record. In my senior year they stated there would be a new rule that if you skipped a class more than 28 times I think you automatically failed- I had chemistry first period- earned a C but skipped like 30 times- I didn't think they'd do it but I received an F- what a crock.
ditto. i remember getting report cards with F's all the way down. my friends and i used to just hang out downtown all day. the only reason why I would ever go to a class is if we were going to build something (or a girl was involved).

If one misses out on their indoctrination, they can become a problem for society or competition for the corporations.
There is a reason that so many people go to university for a decade only to come out and get a job working for someone who quit school in their teens.
The education system is structured to prepare you for a life of working 9-5, being a good little slave for your masters. Not to mention crippling your ability to think critically to limit the chances of you being able to overcome the position you are forced into.
I feel that they can't afford to allow too many people to skip school and end up smarter and wiser as a result of it. An example must be set to deter others from doing the same.

If the government doesn't start performing the functions they are supposed to, and staying out of things that are none of their business, the government should be disbanded entirely, and everyone involved tried and jailed.

I completely agree with you on this!
I know there are enough parents lacking proper parenting skills and kids don't have full brain capacity to oversee everything, but school is such a basic thing. Even kids know that they have to attend it.

What a joke. Ours skipped classes from 1st grade on. Heh, glad we didn't get "caught".
