A chatbot lets you sue without a lawyer

Is AI finally here?

An article in The Verge details a new chatbot which allows anyone to sue Equifax. Equifax is the company that lost control of it's data due to a hacker breach. Could we begin seeing more of these sorts of bots in the future? What about chatbots which help people deal with online harassment or cyberstalking?

Could these chatbots bring more problems than they solve?

At the same time the ease of filing lawsuits could also produce some problems. In a class action lawsuit it's obviously of benefit to the victims because it gives them a way to punish the company for messing up. In other situations these kinds of legal bots could encourage frivolous lawsuits.

I might be old school here, I fear relying a chatbot for any aspect of the legal process is risky. The difference between having a qualified professional handle the lawsuit and a chatbot is more than just money. The chatbot I would guess gives answers based on the user's inputs. A qualified professional would assess the quality of the answers (and determine if the client understood the question to begin with). The professional also has the knowledge that is specific to the state and the client's fact pattern, and can educate on the implications of a small claim, and whether it creates inability to participate in other lawsuits; and eligibility for the free credit monitoring. Not to mention - attending court and arguing the case! This also has the potential to clutter the legal system with false claims and drive the overall cost of government up (just like fraudulent tax filings). If I am underestimating the ability of AI in this regard, please let me know your perspectives.

In the short term you are correct, a human will probably outperform. In the intermediate to long term (5-10-15 yrs) I would say the human will not be able to keep up.

Especially at the rate that this is going.

Ok, that's fair for a 5-10 year view. Thanks Dana.

Good points cryptotax, i was think some of the same things while reading this.

Wow the future looks very nice and fun

Yea i don't trust any big company's, especially the ones that just gather all your personal data. I heard about this, didn't they wait forever to even admit that they got hack'd?
