Giving teachers guns opens padoras box

in #politics6 years ago (edited)

Is arming teachers with guns to deal with active shooters in our schools a good idea? The idea has been floated to the general public and discussed on the news and in open forums. Should teachers have weapons in schools? A teacher could possibly take down a shooter who walks into a school and starts to randomly fire a weapon.

Let’s look at the possible scenarios.

The shooter yells "hello I’m coming into the school in 5 minutes" and I’m going to randomly start shooting people.
The teacher gets the message and removes his or hers pistol from the holster and waits for the gunman by the door and takes the gunman out with one shot. (That’s scenario #1)

The shooter wears a shirt that says I have a gun and I’m mentally unstable. A teacher who has a concealed weapon and has been trained as all teachers will be one day asks the person who poses a threat to put down the weapon! The teacher gets no response from the student and takes the shooter out with one shot, bam!!
The teacher is exalted as a hero. Until they find out the student was actually handicapped and could not hear a word the teacher was saying.
(That’s scenario #2)

An active shooter walks into a school and starts shooting randomly and indiscriminately. The scene is too horrible to describe. The teachers with concealed weapons are scared for their lives even though they have been trained to shoot a weapon they never thought they would be in a real situation. The teachers hide in the basement with the students until the police show up and the shooter takes his or hers own life.
(Thats is scenario #3)

Which situation do you think is more likely ?
I think we are very nieve to believe that teachers who devote their lives to educating young students can now be law enforcement. Furthermore why would I want to send my son or daughter to a school where teachers walk around with guns? Teachers are in schools to teach not to be Law enforcement. I think scenario #3 is more likely. Let’s not open Pandora’s Box.

If you take away teachers, take away schools, and take away students, and replace with...

...Is it a good idea to be able to defend yourself in any given environment, at any given time?

It makes it all much clearer, in my opinion...

Sure everyone should be able to, but the bigger question is how?
When a man is pulled over by the police and he doesnt have a weapon and he is shot for no reason, does he have the opportunity to "defend himself" ?

When a man is pulled over by the police and he doesnt have a weapon and he is shot for no reason, does he have the opportunity to "defend himself" ?

With no weapon, he doesn't, no. Ergo the right to self defense at all times.

The answers are easy, if you ask the right question.

Drilling down into specific details detracts from the principle.

It's the principle that is important.

Everyone has the right to self defense. No 'shades of gray' areas.

Work from that principle, it becomes much clearer.
Anything getting in the way of that principle, automatically negates a fundamental right.

Interesting "the right" I don't think learning institutions are the place or environment to have guns. Lethal tools used to kill and intimidate. Some schools in New York have metal detectors, why you ask?
Because students were bringing guns to school. Why not have everyone bring guns to school, students too. They too have the right to protect themselves.

If the student are adults - yes they do have that right.

If they are not adults - it's not their right - that's the adults job to protect them.

It's a fundamental difference in perspective.

I will take responsibility for myself.

You would prefer to give others the responsibility to look after you...bless. lol

I'm an adult.

How old are you, btw?

Im an adult as well sir.

It is surprising how many adult's wish to be taken care of...in a childlike way.

...through post war cultural marxism - and post modernistic abstract theories gaining intellectual credibility ,- it has 'infantasized' a whole generation - or two.

That's why I ask, mate.

I really appreciate your opinion, its always refreshing to have a spirited debate. We disagree but I know your very passionate about your beliefs and so am I. Experience and knowledge help to develop what we believe in and core set of values. Thank you for a spirited debate sir.
