Venezuela, Angola, Brazil: socialism has been a disaster everywhere

in #politics6 years ago

Ideologues turn a blind eye to reality. They are stubborn to recognize that always and everywhere in the world socialism has failed. It is even worse, they betrayed their promises and their voters by impoverishing society for the benefit of all - meaning a small corrupt group of politicians. This was not only the case in the USSR but it has been the case in Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela corruption has been the obsolete engine of an incestuous economy between the state, the parties and private companies.

This is still the case in Angola, where 36.6% of the population, including 36.6%, was below the poverty line ten years ago and where per capita GDP has not been removed (from 5978 in 2008 to 5984 in 2016). It is true that Angola is the model of a corrupted communism. José Eduardo dos Santos, trained in the USSR and a Soviet of high prestige, was appointed president of the majority party, the MPLA of Angola on September 10, 1979, and ruled the country without response until 2017.

Her daughter Isabel dos Santos is the richest woman in Africa after a long time in Sonangol, the country's oil company. His son Filomeno was the leader of the $5 billion sovereign wealth fund until he was fired and accused of embezzling $500 million. Her other two children benefited from advantageous public contracts. Fortunately, they were all suspended this year after their father withdrew from a power he had confiscated for so long.

The Brazilian experience of the last fifteen years is another illustration. On October 27, 2002, former left-wing trade unionist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the presidential elections by proposing a program to lift Brazilians out of poverty. But beyond the first years of government, poverty returned to Brazil, up 11.2% last year, and nearly 15 million people live on less than $1.90 a day.

Data published by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) show that in 2017 more than fifty million Brazilians, or almost 25% of the population, were below the poverty line and had a family income of $387.07 per month - approximately US$ 5.50 per day.

GDP per capita stagnated, from $13,806 in 2008 to $14,023 in 2016. Odebrecht's scandal devastated this country by engaging a large number of its politicians, including the left. Dilma Roussef and Michel Temer, who succeeded Lula, were beaten. But now he is languishing in prison for other reasons of corruption as well.

When politicians grant themselves all the powers, their tendency is always to preserve it; when they collectivize the economy, the temptation is always to put it in a regulated section at the service of their personal enrichment. That is why we need checks and balances against powers with a distribution of power, which socialism rejects, because it wants the whole power for itself.

As the number of public officials increases, the likelihood that bribery cases will increase in parallel but exponentially increases. Because the longer it takes to reach political agreements, administrative pads, favorable deliberations... of decision, the greater the risk that the countless links in a chain of obscure decisions will be bribed, so it is almost certain that if they fail, the decision will be negative.

The phenomenon is reinforced when it is practiced on a large scale and the system cannot be denounced because of some support others. There is also corruption and fraud in private companies, but much less because these companies have a vested interest in controlling and preventing such diversions.

Perhaps even more, corruption invades societies where freedom is curbed because it becomes their shameful and pernicious substitute, the degraded mode of expression of initiative and the will to do that remains in the heart of every man and especially the most daring.

This is why socialism is naturally and inexorably condemned to disintegrate in a depraved way. But the degradation may be slow and its effects lasting as they are still being felt today in some countries perverted by decades of communist upheaval, such as Romania or Bulgaria. It is easier to destroy the fish pond to turn it into a bouillabaisse than to rebuild the fish pond of the bouillabaisse on the ashes of defeated socialism.
