The Case of the Orange Fool or "It's a Dessert, You Idiots!"steemCreated with Sketch.

In order for you to fully understand how this sad story came to pass, you will need to watch the videos below. The first one is particularly poignant, and without seeing it, you really won't understand what is happening here.

I will sum it up for you, but be sure to watch the first video, at least.

The company that made these videos (http://www.townsends.us/) sells reproductions of 18th century clothing, tools and utensils. They do these videos out of love for history and cooking, and do not even monetize their channel. They are apolitical. All they care about is history.

Well, on the eve of some US holiday or another (sorry I am not from the US, and don't care about holidays that are not my own), Townsends thought, 'Hey, wouldn't this classical recipe be great to up load tomorrow?'. So, they uploaded it.

Oh, boy! Without reason they started getting attacked in the comments by people who were accusing them of disrespecting Donald Trump. Obviously, they saw the title, and didn't bother to watch the video. If they did, and still commented, it was because they were looking for monsters under the bed.

The sad fact is, their attacks nearly had the desired result. This guy seriously considered stopping doing videos. This is what these flamers want. If there is even a suspicion of something that they don't like, or that they think criticizes their beliefs, they want it shut down. So they flame the person until the person becomes too terrified to stand up to them. Thus, all opposition is ended, and they can move on to the next target.

This guy had done nothing wrong, and only fell onto their radar because he dared to publish a video on how to make an 18th century dessert, without first thinking, 'Will the name of the dessert offend someone. Can it be interpreted by someone as an insult to the current president?'.

This is an outrageous case. I can't get it out of my mind. Are we now living in an era when the name of a simple 18th century dessert can cause people to go berserk, and fly into hysterical rage? When they can freely use bullying, down-voting and a host of other things, to shut down anyone who lets slip something they find offensive - and which may not even be intended as they have taken it?

For those of you who want the actual recipe, go to the second video. The 'spicy' comments have been deleted. It would have been better is Townsends had left them up, so that the whole world could see what the nutjobs believed, but, as I have said, they are apolitical. For them, the recipe is all that matters.

Have a good evening.

Sort:

I have been watching Ja. Townsend & Sons videos for quite a while. REALLY great content, especially if you are into both history and cooking, which are my two favorite hobbies. This is insane. I watched the video when it came out and it never even occurred to me that he could have been insulting the President. When he has to put a video out to explain what it was (a desert) in order to keep his business from being destroyed, I think we are doomed as a society.

As long as some people keep their heads on straight, there is hope. I felt so sorry for the poor guy. Thanks for commenting.
