Poker & Food

When you think about poker, you may not necessarily think about food. However, countless number of home poker games involve food. I remember the times of playing a weekly 1/2 NL Holdem cash game once a week, and everyone who came would always be interested in food. Sometimes we would order out, sometimes I would bring some homemade goodies for the group, and sometimes other players would bring munchies.

Even at casinos, poker rooms usually have their own exclusive menu. You've seen it, people place the order, then the waiter/waitress brings out a table, and the person is eating a club sandwich, or Chinese fried rice, while you are waiting for AA. You know you be looking at what they are eating...and who can blame you, poker is a game of hours, and in those hours, there isn't always time to eat.

Humans love to gamble. And humans love to eat. So why not combine the two?!

Would You Eat Your Hand?

As a Lucksacks AFT segment, we will be sharing with you some simple recipes that you can whip up before your poker game. Whether you're playing at home, online, or maybe even anal enough to take your food to the casino (D.N. does it all the time), these dishes will surely bring you some happiness, even if your poker session doesn't...

Today's Starting Hand

69 That's right, good ole, big lick, or happy meal. Or the less common nickname, breakfast of champions. 69 is great for many reasons. You can also play poker with it.

69 should be played at all times, no matter what. Stuff your face and pray for a flop. Don't get too attached though, or it can be a sticky situation.

Today's Dish

Avocado toast - The delicious, healthy, celebrity fascination riddled dish. Them millennials have given avocado toast a bad rap. Mainly cause they went overboard with it. Plastering it everywhere...on magazine covers, billboards, and fucking Snapchat and Instagram. All of a sudden avocado toast was the be all and end all of foodie life. Man, fuck that. I was eating avocado toast well before it became hip to do so. Me and almost every other chef I know. So, fine, have claim our go to snack as your own. Bastardize it. We'll still be here...eating it with a luscious poached egg, and some salt and pepper.

Wait, how is avocado toast and '' the same thing?? Let me tell you...

  • Quite simple - this dish oozes love juice from the egg, and well, 69 helps you ooze love juice from each other

Ingredients

  • Egg
  • Avocado (make sure it's ripe)
  • Salt
  • Freshly cracked black pepper
  • Bread
  • Butter

Crack the egg gently into a fine mesh strainer. Lift it up and down a few times. This allows you to discard the thin egg white that does not make for a pristine poached egg.

Bring some water to a boil in a sauce pot, and cut heat down to low. When the water stops boiling, and is just barely a gentle simmer, use a wooden spoon to cause a vortex. As in take the spoon and swirl it around in a circle until you see small whirlwind action. Gently slide the egg into the pot, and use the spoon to keep the egg whites from straying too far from the yolk. Remove spoon, and wait 3 mins.

Make sure to use a slotted spoon to remove the egg. Again, I stress, be gentle. You don't want the yolk coming, err, breaking too soon.

IMG_5962.JPG
Be gentle, and let some water drip off.

IMG_5963.JPG
Drain all the water by gently placing the poached egg on a paper napkin.

IMG_5964.JPG
Now brown some bread in a pan, with salt, pepper, and butter.

IMG_5965.JPG
Smash the avocado and spoon it onto the bread. Season the avocado with salt, and pepper as well. Top it with the poached egg. And season the egg with salt, and pepper.

I need a cigarette. Bon appetite.
