Life & Death Haikus: Slaying Writer's Block (Original Poem + Short Story)

in #poetry7 years ago (edited)

I personify
Writer's Block as a creature
Then I destroy it...

I was alone standing at the edge of the waters of Lake Peril. Ironically, it was once called Lake Pearl but after the sudden mysterious death of 7 victims last year during a fishing trip and their remains being found scattered about the area, many people didn't dare to come around here anymore. I stared into the blackness as the sun was just beyond the horizon, fading ever so quickly into the depths of nighttime. The waters were eeriely still and I wondered how the fish or even the gentle breezes I could feel on my face from the evening wind could not even be able to make the waters move at all. It was all quite strange. Then one ripple came rolling towards me from where I stood at the dock's ledge, and then another ripple followed and another and before I knew it, a hideous looking pale skinned creature came bursting through the black waters. It had a viciously fanged mouth that gaped vertically for its entire face, a face that had no eyes, ears or nose. It was some type of humanoid and it lashed out its left arm at me with curved hooks at the end of its hand. It almost sliced my right foot off as I scurried out of the way, rolling backwards and spinning 180 to put some distance between me and it. I grabbed some heavy jagged stones nearby and began chucking them with all my might at the creature as it climbed up on the dock. I smashed its faced pretty good with bull's eye accuracy. My heart was racing as I watched in awe as it wriggled and writhed in pain and anger. I grabbed a few more heftier rocks and dared to step closer in range for a more effective impact. I hurled the damn stones with a grunt and struck its left shoulder, the second stone broke off its right hand's two hooked nails as it was swinging wildly at me. The hooks were ripped off its fingers and it backed up towards the edge of the dock, bleeding out a bluish slime. I crept lowly and snatched the two thick, long nails and added them to my arsenal. I ran back and grabbed the biggest stone I could find as the creature lunged forward one last time and I hurled it as hard as I could with Olympic like form, thudding its stomach and causing it to fall heavily on its back. It lie in pain heaving and spurting out more bluish goo and I sprinted up quickly in this vulnerable moment, and began slashing its arms off with the two broken off talons I had recovered. Now armless and out of commission, the creature lay near lifeless, draining out on the dock as I perspired and hyperventilated from such a wicked experience. I will never forget this day. The moment I slayed Writer's Block once more. I knew it would return, it always does, always in a new form, more menacing and treacherous than the last, but I am learning everyday how to master my creativity and slay it each and every time it tries to attack and stop my progress. May the others I share my story with take heed and also prepare themselves for battle to the death, For Writer's Block is the most sinister shapeshifter the world of literature has ever seen...

Thanks for the warning, for us who are just starting out in this steemit world, this type of incentive is very important, very creative and audacious, so we gradually come to know the rapacious opposites of technology and that there are always good guides that subtly teach the novices like me, thanks.

You're most welcome, glad to help out however I can to inspire others to overcome such things like Writer's Block. Thanks for reading.

Writer's Block is the most sinister shapeshifter the world of literature has ever seen...

So true!! Wow! What a gripping tale! I too have battled the beast, not always as successfully as I would have liked. What has helped me the most, is a simple tool, yet I am not always diligent in it's regular use.

I call it Meditative Journaling. I try to keep some writing tool and paper or journal by my bed. When I first wake, before doing anything else. Before checking my phone, or even putting my feet on the floor, I grab my writing supplies and start spilling. I go for about 3 full pages, maybe 15-20 minutes and I just gush. I just write non-stop. Even if it's things like, "This is stupid. I'm a horrible writer. Etc..." I write it all, but I don't stop to think about it, I am just the messenger to the page, relaying all these crazy thoughts.

What I've found is by doing this, I expel much of my own inner negativity! The "sinister shapeshifter" is greatly weakened in this way.

Thank you for sharing your own strategies and tactics to slaying this oppressive beast. That is a great way to expel the negativity and as I have said before the act of writing even the most mundane thoughts, helps you to later describe your creative ideas with such detail and care because writing becomes second nature and the transferrence of thoughts into words is more fluid from all the practice each time you do this routine of writing each morning. Best of success to you and your audience will find you through your quality content and consistency. Steem on
