This poem is a form called Acrostic. The most common type of an Acrostic poem is the first letter of each sentence makes up a word. In most cases the title of the poem or the subject. However it does not have to be the first letter, there are a variety of ways to write an Acrostic poem. Here is a decent site to gain an understanding if you're interested. This poem uses the first letter style.

It's not often life gives us pleasant little surprises. Be aware of them, enjoy them, don't take them for granted.
