On The First of The Year
On the first of the year-
We all say we are going to try to be better -
We are going to kill our vice,
Listen to other's advice
and live without fear.
How easily we forget what we intend,
or how we are going to mend
broken friendships and make up
for lost time.
We are such forgetful children,
busy playing adults without faults-
excusing our inaction with the idea
of 'Tomorrow' - when 'Tomorrow' is
already here- and 'Today' is now
'Yesterday.'
So, when will we learn to live for today
and stop looking to our lost past
or our awaiting future?
As children we love ceremony
and all the harmony - so
the first of the year
is already here -
let us put on our hats and blow our whistles -
make our thoughtless promises and
scream our voiceless cheer
for its the new year,
that awaits with all its illusion.
