To Peter
I was walking out the door when she told me you were dead
Words not quite registering inside this empty head.
With a car-load of friends, off to the Fair
The news of your fate reflecting my stare.
It couldn't be true, it couldn't for fuck's sake
I'll find out in the morning it was all a mistake.
Unfortunately it wasn't, it was sadly true
You were 70 yards away when those assholes shot you.
Your murder led to international outrage
Making the news on my hometown's front page.
A parade in your honor on St. Patrick's day
Your impact is still felt to this day.
Farewell for now, my dear Irish friend
Life isn't always the way we intend.
All of those memories we created out back
Only increase the pain as my smile fades to black.
So sad and so senseless.....
Hope this one will bring happier memories

Yes it was. I think I kept these feeling internal for too long. It felt necessary to get this out. I think I'll go back to comedy and paranormal for now, though.
That is the beauty of writing - we can get it out in pieces and parts when we need to - and then, move on....
I like both the content and the rhymes of your poetry. Your style is clean, simple but deep at the same time. Was he a friend?
@originalworks
Thank you, that's what I was going for. Yes, we were friends.
I'm really sorry dear friend for your loss. Words are inadequate and empty in front of such an horrible event. I will check your link to the new, may Peter rest in peace.
Thank you for your kind words.

I'm so sorry for the horrible loss of your friend, hon. To have him taken by the evil in this world, it's absolutely heartbreaking. He must have been a wonderful person to have been loved so much by you. I wish you didn't have to carry this pain. If you'd like, whenever you'd like, I'll be here for you if you want or need a sounding board or to talk.
Love,
Brisby
Thank you. There's a lot to his story. I recently looked him up on duckduckgo and found quite a bit of articles.
I'm amazed that you could do that. I hope it didn't hurt too badly to read about him from a stranger's perspective.
It was a highly publicized and politicized murder that had repercussions in England and Ireland. It was interesting to see the wide range of coverage from major news organizations to the local coverage. Even a graduate student came to my house to interview my parents for his thesis.
I want to ask if it helped make sense of what happened but, what sense has there ever been in murder? Was his family (which includes you) able to get to get any sort of justice?
(I care and I'm not trying to pry. I promise I'll stop whenever you wish me to, just say so and I'll shore whatever line you choose.)
Did he appreciate laughter the way you do?
Honestly, no. It brought back a lot of memories and emotions that I had pushed aside for too long.
Justice is a funny thing. When a murderer goes to prison, is that really justice, or just revenge.
He was full of Irish blarney.
If you're curious, by all means, have at it...

I swear some memories are angry snakes lying in wait.
You have a point that justice is subjective. I suppose that the most to be had would be a sense of relief that the criminal isn't free to hurt anyone else if they were incarcerated.
Having read what you shared though, my heart goes out to you and his family.
He sounds like a corker. It's good that you have memories like that. Those treasures that you can hold in your heart and honor who he was.
