Burdened Blessings

in #poetry6 years ago (edited)
Adults… shame on us all for making the children March for Our Lives… our nation’s burdened blessings.

And a child will lead them… marching
Change is needed… change is coming…
Change is coming in hope with burdened blessings

Children ripped again from childhood
New purpose seared across their souls
Forever changed… in six minutes and twenty seconds

Another seventeen lives torn away
Horrific tragedy now renders
Hope… Change is coming in searing burdened blessings

Adult will frozen in paralytic discord
Left children to march for our lives
Never another six minutes and twenty seconds

Change is here, the children decry
“We won’t back down! Enough!”
A Nation’s hope, these beautiful burdened blessings

Thank you, @momzillanc for addressing this moral failure on our parts as adults. Heartening & devastating, at once, to see the children/our future, marching for their lives (as the headline-like lines in your piece announce).

Enough is too much, it's time for us to, finally, wake up!

We must do better and, if not, we must step out of the way and let the children lead - as they are not blinded by greed, fear and violence as we are. Bless you _/|\_

Thank you so much for your fulsome praise.

I’d been jotting down for a few days for the poem I intended to base the words “burdened blessings” upon. But, when I sat down to organize those notes into a poem, I just happened to have the local news app running on my FireTV. It was cycling through the #MarchForOurLIves day footage, playing the speeches of kids at companion marches all around the country, as well as the Parkland survivors in DC. The poem took a dramatic turn from the notes I’d been making. Something entirely different came out.

And yes, it’s time and past time for us adults, and our “paralytic discord” to get out of the way and let the children lead where we have failed to act. It’s time for us to follow and let them lead the way to the future they deserve.

Yes, poems have a life of their own, and tend to respond to what is most urgent in the air...

Here's a short meditation of mine on guns as a symptom of spiritual disease

Alternating refrain effective--"six minutes and twenty seconds", "burdened blessings". You pick up the banner from the children as they go back to the classroom, in hope and apprehension.

Thank you. It was that speech by Emma González that inspired that refrain.

Heartfelt stuff there @momzillanc We could do a lot worse than to listen to the children in so many debates, but most especially here.. Great poem..

Thank you so much.
