Love Is (Shakespearean Sonnet)
(A love sonnet.)
'Tis better to have loved and lost
than never to have loved at all.

Love is a bird, as bards sometimes would say,
soaring the sky, displaying gentle ways.
Its wings, a caress through the hairs of May,
kissing the bosom of a lovely day.
Love is, they say, a prancing pretty toy
which entertains the young and saves the old;
the smile of two, although one might be coy
and step aside before the one who’s bold.
Love is, the bitter puts their honest word,
ill butterflies tickling your guts at will,
a feeling deep of fears of loss unheard.
A bird it is, caught in obnoxious thrill.
Love is, my friend, what I desire the most.
Should I forget one day it might be lost.

This is a shakespearean sonnet I have composed with much love and has been inspired by the famous lines in the epigram of this post, which belong to a poem by Tennyson: “In Memoriam A.H.H.” Curiously, many think the lines are Shakespeare's.
