My daughter's amazing work - 1

in #poetry7 years ago (edited)

Back at Amelia's primary school the kids in her class studied WWI, and after the lessons were finished they were encouraged to write or draw (or whatever) something to do with the information, and their feelings about it.

Amelia wrote a poem - and to me, not only is it poignant and touching, it also says that the school didn't gloss over the horrors of that time.

This is her work ...

My face scarred with barbed wire
Amongst the troops, was no liar.
As we pranced through the fire,
The temperature got higher and higher.
On the floor, the sandbags lay,
But we stand, to run away.

In the trenches men lay
as we shot and shot away.
In the trenches there were rats
But in the trenches there weren’t mats.
Dead, dirty bodies were on the floor,
this is the bloodbath of the war.
