GRENDEL'S AUNT (an original poem) - Part 9

in #poetry8 years ago (edited)

This metered ode is written by a faery poet named Brighid. She's a character in my novel, The Grim Girl's Gallowglass. In pre-Christian Irish mythology, Brigid (spelled differently) was a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann, a supernatural race. She was the goddess "whom poets adored." Brighid writes this poem, "Grendel's Aunt," over the course of the novel.

"Grendel's Aunt" follows a hero named Hymm who transacts a business deal with Dwenndis, aunt of the monster Grendel, from Beowulf.

And below are the next four stanzas:

Suddenly Dwenndis appeared on the thoroughfare.
“Why, at my note, do you leer?”
I stopped in that well known Deciduous Pub
(of their grub, I must say, I'm dismissive).
The kitchen witch asked if I'd do her this missive-
delivering favor. So here
.”

She scanned it quite quickly and tucked it away,
while the knight hemmed and hawed his regrets.
Let this day, Wednesday, be my make-amends day,
I'm sorry for reading your ancestor's pleading
.”
And so the two traveled together toward Mundt,
toward the showdown with Grendel impending.

A strobile of silence stayed with them apace
and then finally the fish thought to mention
her nephew was eager to maim and beleaguer
the villagers, livestock, the frail, even Hymm.
She wanted to warn Hymm the monster might veer
and his violent part overplay.

But she held in her hand some pedantic peduncles,
the stems of matriculate mushrooms.
“Eat of these, Hymm, and you'll then understand
the mysterious secrets directly at hand
causing kingdoms to render my Grendel more feral.
Hymm, Cindy may well be in peril.”
