Nine-to-fiving

Working
behind the cardboard,
multi-purpose office desk, I’m
stalling seconds
into minutes, hours, weary
not to try too hard or not to try it less.

Here comes the supervisor, I’m
quick to grab a pen
and sketch some tables, weary
not to try too hard or not to try it less.

Lunch breaking
behind the plastic,
spotless window panes, I’m
trading crucial smiles
with crucial people, weary
not to try too hard or not to try it less.

Here comes the supervisor, “what a lovely dress
you’re wearing !” weary
not to try too hard or not to try it less.

Working (again)
behind the air-conditioned,
keyboard-powered
office desk, I’m
stealing corporate seconds
minutes, hours, weary
not to try too hard or not to try it less.

Here comes the supervisor, I’m
quick to fake success,
and summon spreadsheets, weary
not to try too hard or not to try it less.
